his merry band of thieves with their cameras, its safer.

The introduction of helmet laws has nothing to do with personal protection
if that's your implication ? If is was, they would be used in cars
particularly to protect the head against side impacts.

Like "speed cameras", helmet laws are a non sequitur to allow bureaucracy
to convince politicians something is being done about safety, then to allow
politicians to convince a gullible public something is being done.

The only thing it really achieves are newspaper column inches and radio/TV
sound bytes with the unfortunate consequence leading to distraction from
    the real debate.

At its core it's simply an erosion of personal liberties against a
marginalised group, this erosion will continue to happen to all
marginalised groups until there is nothing left.

    That didn't help.

Allow me to highlight my points and just tell me whether you agree or not.
    1. There are a lot more bikes around now than pre-helmet law days.
    2. Wearing a helmet is safer than not wearing a helmet
    3. There are less head injuries to cyclists now that the laws have been
    introduced

    Summary
    Helmet laws are good.

Do you? I don't ride a bike for the thrill, that's what the motorcycle is
    for.
I like to ride for the leisurely way of travelling around the neighbourhood,
and the oxygen in the lungs.
Can't say that getting hot as ever caused me to crash.
That's your best argument so far.

    And just for fun...

WHen the helmet law came in, I saw fewer pusbikes but the riders were
    all wearing helmets.

I see more pushbikes, but a fair few riders aren't wearing helmets.
On my evening constitional yesterday I saw 6 other bikes, and only 2
of those riders were wearing lids.

A law that is not enforced is merely a suggestion.

Ok, it is more likely to beleive, based on meagre evidence provided so far,
that a doubling in the number of bikes is more likely to mean more riders,
than less riders who buy more bikes.

That is a counter to 'helmet laws are good' premise (ie helmet laws reduced
rider numbers and are therefore not good)
Not proof, but it would be the most likely conclusion. We're talking a
million bikes a year. There must be some adventurous cyclists if it is the
same or less amount amount of riders are snapping up all those machines.

    Yes.

Starting with the one that by choosing to ride a motorcycle corks is
choosing to be 20 times more likely to cost taxpayer money than if he
    didn't so choose.

So get off your bike corks! And start going to the gym, I want to see
those results, because everyone knows that diabetes and other
lifestyle related diseases cost heaps. Oh, and resign - stress
claims by coppers are costing NSW taxpayers buckets of money.

Well, in summertime, you'd get a lot of motorcycle couriers getting
heat exhaustion and passing out while riding.

  16. It would be a great idea, and would help reduce time in hospital for
many accident victims that do not wear leathers. However, it would not
affect fatalities that much. Road rash is not a major killer.

If, however, we are talking helmets, making motorcyclists wear helmets
would reduce the number of fatalities and serious injuries. (oh, hang
    on, it did)
If you google for statistics in countries that don't have compulsory
helmet laws, and those that do, you will see quite a difference (for the
    better) in those that do.

I remember my dad wearing a helmet in the early 50s. A leather one to keep
his ears warm. I'll bet it did a better job than my Nolan or my Shoei.
