Help needed with balance and riding

Discussion in 'Australian Motorcycles' started by Gurfateh Phil Singh, Aug 21, 2004.

  1. G'day.,

I'm seeking some advice about learning to ride. I have a slight balance
problem. Nothing too serious, but standing on one leg is a trial. With bike
riding, I'm finding low speed maneuvering to be a real problem. Has anyone
encountered such an issue before and if so, is there a solution? I have seen
several doctors, but they can't seem to figure out the problem. I've taken
numerous exercise and yoga classes, but the balance problem persists. I'm
fine as a pillion passenger. Thanks for your time.

    Cheers

how do you go riding a bicycle ???

low speed manoeuvres are prob the most difficult

I would see how you go riding a push bike and go from there as some bikes
will be easier than others to ride slowly

  3. I hadn't thought of that. Haven't been on a pushbike since school in '85.
I'll give it a go. Cheers

Couple of things to try with the slow riding.
Always keep your head and eyes up, looking forwards at where you want to go,
not the ground, not the dash, not the front wheel.
Grip the tank of your bike as tightly as you can with your knees, as an
instructor once said, "like you mean it"

This goes without saying, keep your upper body loose and relaxed.
As for standing on one leg, you'll get used to it in time. If not, you'll
wobble in the wind, like me..

Ride a pushbike to get your confidence up.
on a motorcycle look where you are going don't look at the road directly
    ahead of the headlight.
When you get used to looking ahead rather than down then you will find
    low speed manoevering a doddle.

You're bloody quick Nick! only posted that a couple of seconds ago!

PS. When the bike weighs 3 time you do, and you're a bean pole with a
relatively high CofG you try not looking strange...

    Ahhh
I thought your standing on one leg was some strange tantric thing.

As others have said, try a pushbike to see how you go. I don't imagine
you will have a problem riding.

However, You could be in serious trouble when it comes to putting on wet
gear. If you can't stand on one leg to pull on wet weather trousers,
you'd better only ride in dry weather. Better get a Ducati, just to be
    sure.

Lots of good bike info already given. Did the doctors check your ears and
hearing? A friend of mine has a some sort of middle ear condition that
causes her to completely lose her balance to the point where her ability
even stand on two feet is gone. Only happens from time to time mind you but
there is supposedly no cure for whatever she has.

Could be. Plural of tantrum, where you get a sore foot from stamping it
so much, that you have to stand on one leg to relieve the pain.

It was immortalised in the movie, "The Karate Kid". Recommended therapy
is getting a job in a car wash.
