Is all that smoke and flashing lights normal for one of them?
Not for quite some time I fancy.

The smoke is from the headers and turbo unit; they got a bit oily when
    the crankcase emptied onto them.

The flashing light is a general fault warning; in this case low fuel but
could be oil, stand, fuel injection and another I've forgotten. There's
another warning console on the fuel tank (but it's out of the rider's
direct line of sight) that shows exactly which one.

It seems to be a weekend for workshop results.
yeah, I had a panicky moment today when I thought I saw smoke coming
from the alternator, but it was just my oily fingerprints on the
    exhausts.

Nice. Is there a smell more satisfying than oil burning off an engine
    you've just rebuilt ?

  13. Mileage about 40k, asking price will be about 900->1k with 12 months
MOT. The seller has bought it as a non-runner and replaced one wiring
loom and the ECU after it wasn't powering the fuel pump. He now wants to
MOT it to get maximum sale value, which I can't really argue about.
Seems to be a bit of a turbo specialist on the quiet, and has loads of
spares etc, so another useful contact.

Not too bothered about cosmetics, as this is instead of something like a
later Bandit I'll have a bit of cash to spend tidying it up. The blue
bars and footrest hangars look bloody awful.

I'll have more of an idea on condition when I see it in the flesh.

Aye, start from cold, check for smoke etc. The bloke seems well clued up
so I'm getting good vibes, said he'd lift the rotor cover to check for
tight spots in the turbo shaft, as well as checking boost. I get the
feeling he's making a bit of beer money dealing in turbos, and he's a
regular on Lorcans forum, which all adds up. As mentioned in the
previous thread he's also got a very nice US turbo which is up for 2k.

On the downside I don't exactly have a great deal of choice, these two
being the only turbos I've found for sale in the last couple of months
despite regular trawls of ebay and biketrader.

Well, to be honest, for around 1k I was expecting more of a shed, and
was planning on a fairly major project. As it looks half decent I'll
probably just tidy it up. Get rid of the gash blue paint, get a few bits
powder coated, sort the paintwork etc[1]. I know it's expensive, but
what the hell, it's only a hobby - right? I'm not bothered about making
money, if I can get it looking nice and it runs ok then it'll probably
be a keeper anyway. Laura hates going pillion on the RD[2], so it should
    get more use.

Nervous question... exhaust systems - same as the non-turbo, or
    different and horrendously expensive?

[1] There's a ding in the tank you may not have spotted in the photos,
plus the inevitable odd snapped fastener, although paintwork is supposed
    to be in good nick.
[2] Apparently the novelty of the 2 stroke vibration wears off after a
    few miles.

  16. Ta, I will be paying extra close attention to the state of the downpipes
and that header pipe. There was a set of downpipes on ebay a week or so
ago for 50 quid, so they are at least obtainable.

Make sure the bastard oil cooler lines haven't mysteriously cracked since
the engine last ran or you'll spend the morning lying underneath it.

Yes. I'm awaiting the results of chemical metal voodoo.

If that fails it's off with the exhausts and source a replacement.
