Here's another one anyway.. About forty miles south and east of Cuernavaca.. middle of nowhere and that old GoldWing of mine was running fine.. Stereo blasting and sure having myself a good ride.. Ahead of me, I saw a temporary roadblock across the highway, with several cars pulled to the side.. As I approached the temp barricade, couldn't help but notice the stateside plates on many of those cars.. Texas, Colorado and California, for the most part.. Idly along in first gear, I got a pretty good look at the people in those cars, as I passed them.. They were Mexican men, women and children in each car.. obviously living in the U.S. and visiting family in Mexico.. The roadblock seemed to be manned by Mexican soldiers, by the way they were dressed and the arms they carried.. When I was stopped, they kind of drifted over and were mostly admiring my motorcycle.. bells, whistles and all.. The typical questions were asked and answered.. Where you been.. where you going.. etc.. etc.. After the questions were satisfied, they waved me through and I was gone.. Later in the afternoon I was in a motel in Cuernavac, showered, shaved and having a nice drink by the pool.. A caravan of Suburbans came in, loaded with people.. The cars all had American Consulate emblems on the doors and when the people started getting out, I recognized some of them from that roadblock earlier.. Bein rather nosy, I asked one of the little guys with clipboards, if they'd had an accident or what the deal was.. He told me that the roadblock was not manned by Army personnel, but by bandidos .. Their object was to rob the people and take their vehicles, which they'd obviously done.. I don't understand why they didn't get me and gave me a pass.. Several theories were offered but I'll never really know..
