Do you still have that Bandit you were thinking of selling? ... My cousin is
    after a new ride.

Errm no, missed by that much !

Traded it in on the Cagiva X Raptor in April.

But central coast motorcycles may well still have it: quick look up:

    http://www.ccmotorcycles.com.au/used/index.html

Yup, they do although they've kinda got it hidden they want $6990 for
it, but they should take less given I think I got about 4 or 5K for it
(I forget now) and they've had it for 9 months.

Not sure if that url will work, if not, go to the first link find the
blue bandit listed for 9990 and you'll find it's the 96 model mentioned
at the end. (black with a carbon clad formula 1 pipe (legal) and a
ventura rack). It had about 50 or 60K on it when I sold it.

No Dramas .. it was just a thought. He's got a budget of about 3-4 (5 at a
push) if you know of anything .. looking for suggestions at the mo:

Bit of info, he 21, has had full licence for about a year, learnt of a suzi
    500. used mainly for a commute to college in tassie and a blat on weekends
    (read UJM)

Suggestions i thought of for im so far:
    Bandit 600
XJ600 (maybe getting a bit long in the tooth these days)
    YZF600
    RF600
    CBR600 f3? f4?
    gsx600/750f

any other ideas? I've steered away from the r6/r1/gsxr's as (IMHO) these
kinda bikes want to be ridden hard from what i've read (and tried in the
case of the gixxer) - where as the ones listed are a little more sedate
(however as i said to him... its really up to you as a rider to choose
whether to be a twat or not)

    Cheers

If he can find an R1 for 4 grand it's been well trashed and thrashed and
    not worth buying I'd suggest.
    Yeah that's about it.

Other options 3-5 grand... - well a quick search of trading post throws
    up the following possibles:
    ER5
    CBR1000
    early zx6
quite a few yzf600s (good choice)
    vfr 750
    zx9r
    zxr750
    vfr400
    gixxer1100
    fjr1100
    fj1200
    zzr1100

On the one hand the big 4s (FJ/ZZR/CBR) are very capable good for parts
etc, on the other hand they're neither great for commuting nor great for
    fanging.

    I'd suggest a middleweight as well - zx6 cbr600 r6(if he can find one)
etc - there's bugger all traffic in hobart outside the peak 5 minutes so
a sporty machine shouldn't be too bad to commute on. Alternatively a
light sporty 250 could be more fun if he's on a limited budget..

Tell him to stick with the Suzuki and save his money.
    There's not much a GS500 can't do capably and there's not much a 21yo,
1-year-licenced rider needs to do that a GS500 can't (in my opinion).
Tell him to stop looking at glossy bike magazines and use the money for a
    house deposit or something!
