Hey Johno!

  1. I dunno. Chas Kelly tested it out pretty hard during the first Targa
Tasmania. We wanted to see if he could get the F40 Ferrari from a
standing start to 300km/h inside what was left of the flying mile.
What wasn't revealed at the time is that he struggled to pull the car
up and overshot the stage end, very nearly cleaning up the marshalls,
as per that incident in the NT that also involved an F40 from memory.
Thankfully, no injuries or damage in this one.

For that same Targa, I took Denny Hulme and Jack Brabham down to the
old rail bridge underpass and let them discuss the old days on camera.
There was buggerall room for mistakes going through there. Scary. I
don't believe anyone came to grief there though. Somehow.

Now you're testing my memory. They chopped about a third of the original
straight off, where they put in that smooth left hand curve. It used to
go down to a hard T lect turn. Whether that was before the first Targa
or not I can't be sure.

  3. Yeah - it used to go to a hard turn down near the river at Newries
Corner (my uncle built a really nice house right on that corner so I
have lots of memories of that area). The last part at the other end
was converted into a turn-in to join the new highway that cut through.
I'm not really sure how much of the flying mile got excised though. We
didn't actually measure it, but it was esentially the same then (1992)
as it is now. So if your guess of 1/3 is correct then expecting even
an F40 to go from standstill to 300km/h and stop again was probably
pretty silly of us. Especially when he did it in failing light. We
lied in the documentary and sort of implied he reached 300km/h but
from memory I think it was about 20km/h less than that. At least it
    didn't all end in tears.
