Washed the MT-03 today as it was utterly filthy. After washing it,
even though it was in first, i kicked up the stand & pulled in the
clutch, hit the start button & the fucking thing lurched forward as if
in gear, not the clutch was fully in & it was in gear.

I have never known this happen before on any bike?

Stuck clutch? I gave it a rock or two in gear, tried in vain to find
any kind of neutral. Eventually, I got neutral & it then started as
    normal.

Any ideas? It's off for it's first service on Monday. Now & again on a
run it kind of doesn't find the gear right & either bounces out of
gear, could be me not pegging it, but i doubt it after riding a blade
    for many miles.

I have. If the bike's been standing overnight then sometims the plates
don't separate properly. My TL was like that.

Sounds fairly normal for a wet clutch bike. Happened on my CBr6, VFR750 &
TDM850. Normally manifests itself by a noisy clonk as you engage 1st gear.

Generally, I parked the bike in neutral, started the bike normally and then
held the clutch in for 15-20 secs before engaging 1st gear. This usually
    eliminated the problem.

IME some bikes are worse than others. As for ancient designs with
    plates with cork inserts...

    I take it you've never ridden a TDM850?

I had one of the very earlier ones and heartily concur with Pip's
solution - a strong left ankle is all that's required.

The 'box on that bike was especially bad. I little bit of heat in the oil
made it quite a bit better.

It only mattered to me because I don't like to hear the noise. That's the
best rationalisation I can offer. Pretty piss poor, really, considering my
    usual form.

No it wasn't. It worked perfectly well, all the time, as long as you
didn't try and pussy-foot around with it.

I suppose it's more mechanically sympathetic, but I expect that most
people have better things to do than sit there for 20 seconds with the
    clutch held in.

  18. And someday you end up with a noisy main bearing at the clutch end.
