I can't believe you are arguing for a return to the Prince of Darkness. I
drove 25k last year and was never once blinded. HID's are utterly feckin ace
and if WUN upgrades I bet he gets them OEM.

No, it's far older than that. "Cotton-pickin'" is a pejorative
modifier, synonymous with "damn" or "fuckin'."

    Other uses:
"Are you out of your cotton-pickin' mind?"
"Get your cotton-pickin' hands off that."

A cotton-pickin' minute lasts as long as it takes to get something off
    your chest.

But were all of those HID, that being WUN's gripe.
I don't get blinded by oncoming lights because I developed the habit of
looking down at the white line or verge on the left.

Irrelevant. WUN, Champ and I object to lights that are unnecessarily
bright. All HID lights fall into that category. Hence we object to HID
    lights. Forgotten your set theory?

Compltelely arbitrary definition of 'unnecessarily bright' though innit.
Which is why we should go back to acetylene lamps.

Not at all. There are different words you can use, none of which are
beyond criticism. I could have said "lights that are too bright" but
that would have been tautological. I could have said "lights that are
very bright", in which case we'd simply argue about what is and isn't
"very bright". The concept of a brightness which is enough to see by
but not too much to blind is a useful one, and I think is reasonably
captured by the word "necessary". It is, of course, a continuum, which
invites sloppy thinking - manifesting itself in words like
    "arbitrary".

I could 'effectively blind' you with my bicycle lights if they were
wset wrongly. I think the whole HID thing's a red herring, TBH.

In fact I'd go so far as to say that they simply illuminate[1] the
problem because in normal use their cut-off lines are so precise that
they don't blind at all, hence you notice them much more when cresting
hills etc., whereas od-fashioned ones have a more progressive cut-off,
and actually blind you in a much less noticeable fashion.

    [1] Pun intended
