Hmm. Interesting.

Along one of my regular routes I've seen minor roadworks over the past
few weeks. There has always been a white van involved with a logo from
    a company called Telent.

I finally remembered to look them up tonight: they're into, amongst
other things, road safety systems (exact details not made clear in
their initial blurb), traffic monitoring and charging.

I'd be interested to know exactly what they're installing.

With the government we've got at the moment, I wouldn't be suprised if it
was some sort of credit card reader under the tarmac.

I don't know where you are, but some counties (Hertfordshire) have
good info on roadworks on their websites, it might be worth a look on
your County Council website. Or just ring the highways dept. and ask
them, I've always found that to be more successful than you might
    think!

The "Elgin" site is quite useful, it covers about half the country
    currently.
