So it failed the MOT on:

    Front pads
Chain adjustment (probably needs new chain)
Horn is crappy (too crappy for the test)
Some muppet seems to have installed the heated grips a bit crap, whoops.
With a service on top that comes out as £250 with a probably extra £165
    for the chain and fitting.

£415 seems a bit steep for a years motoring.

MOT is out on the 29th although presumably the dvla now know it's failed?
It's tempting to break it (it being a sheddy er5) but I've never done
that, and the people here would no doubt hate the mess.
I could get a refund on my insurance, because I'm within the 14 days
    distance selling fluff.

    uh, so... </blog>

Failing the MOT doesn't invalidate the old one.

    £11.99 + half an hour's work?
Are the adjusters at their limit? How far off the back sprocket can you
    pull the chain?
Fiver for a pattern one? Or twoddle the twiddle screw, check connectors.
Not sure how that may may/not affect Mot, but can't be difficult to fix.
    Double rip.
I'm sure Lozzo could help you but you can bring it out west (Newbury) if
    you get stuck.

They said that the bloke who helped put them on bent the handlebars
    getting the old grips off.

Apparently they cause a little bit of positive throttle when the bars
    are wound round.

Would it be a problem were the wires disconnected and tied to the bars?
They're just 'not-heated grips' then, surely?

I looks like they're trying to bugger you.

... something that I'm prepared to do for approximately half that amount.

It doesn't sound like it should take much fixing. A tweak of the bars
and/or throttle cable and/or twist grip.

A bit less probably, where do you buy em?
Fair enough. The man I just spoke to about keeping my bike till the
morning said it'll adjust ok for the test, just he recons a new chain is
a good idea. I can think on that fact a while.
Doesn't work all the time, so the man said. I guess emery paper and wd40
should fix it if it works at all.
Causes a little positive throttle on full lock, part of the grip touches
    the tank apparently.
They blow up if you don't service them, don't they?
The garage was on about new air filters and things, I've looked at mine
recently and it looked in decent nick, so a self service is probably
better than letting someone assume it's all broken and replacing the lot.
I'm thinking in terms of proportionality. I'm part way through one of
those 'year out's that are so popular with the middle classes, so cash
is a slightly unknown quantity in 7 months time. Also, **** buses.
I suppose that's logic. I'll need a man to help me do the pads though,
the very thought makes my legs go wobbly.

If I can't get it sorted before Saturday, what's the rap for riding
without an MOT? I'm just the sort to get asked questions on the way to
    someone's garage.

    That would be bad.
That wouldn't make any difference to the throttle problem though, would it?

I'm sure we were careful to avoid that, maybe they have slipped round a

The grip on the right side has a cable exit point which is a bit chunky,
from the guys description, on full lock it touches the tank, which is
    the problem.

It's probably well possible to slacken off the whatsit that holds the
bars onto the top yoke and swivel them a little till it's free. I'll be
able to see what he's on about in the morning.
