And for the final touch: how much did the parts sell for, roughly?

I remembre reading that, and I had the same thought again as I did at
the time. Their final words are: "A day later, when everything had
cooled down, we top up the oil and start the engine. It runs smoothly
and doesn't sound too bad either. The bike's won. We leave it alone."

I can't help but append the next part of the sentence " and nige it
out on ebay to some poor unsuspecting mug."

About a grand, with a couple of bits still left kicking around.

So, £4,200 new, minimal servicing costs, about £300 to repair it after
binning it at Croft and still a grand cash-back at the end - man, that
was a cheap bike to run.

Yeah... I'd convinced myself that they went on to run it regularly and
reliably for a reasonable length of time, but I obviously remember wrongly.

I ran my tuned 650 Yam with a 250 Honda chain on it for a week or two
even though I knew it was too small and kept spitting the outer
rollers off when I gave it full throttle. I was a skint 3rd year
apprentice and it never occurred to me that maybe I should either stay
in for a week to pay for a new chain or cycle to work until I could
    afford that chain.
Change the oil when you rebuild the engine worked for me.

It was PB, and the thing refused to die even when they'd dropped all
the oil out of it and carried on running it on the dyno.

And do the valves at the same time, yes?

Not every time. There's no reason to move the locknuts when you remove
the rockers and we're not talking about engines with shims are we?

Good point. It ain't broke, don't fix it.
I'm certainly not. Although the only engines I did actually rebuild in
my youth, SL125 and XT500, were both OHC, so fairly advanced.
