Hmmmm.....do I really need a hyper-sports bike?

    Doing some thinking over the last couple of days about whether or not I
    really need a hyper-sports bike (the new ZX10R I've decided to get shortly).
    See, I'm going to be using it as a daily commuter, a short trip of about
    30km's each way to work (not in traffic though....straight up the highway).
    However, it's likely to get some pretty regular trips further up the
    highway.....albeit only short ones (120kms and back). I've actually
    considered maybe getting something a bit more 'friendly', seeing as I'll be
    spending lots more time on it than I did on the last sports bike I had ('99
    ZX7). Unfortunately, there's nothing around that grabs my attention.
    Suggestions? Maybe a ZZR1200? I just don't know. I loved my ZZR1100 when
    I had it.....it was even quite comfortable on longer trips, as opposed to
    the ZX7, which bashed my arse about halfway up my back after 30mins or so.

    Oh the agony of choice.....

    I loved my ZZR1100 when I had it.....

    get another one second hand? or ride a 1200 see what you think.. wont
    have the same wanker value as the ZX10R if thats an issue.

  3. The ZZR1200 is a vast improvement on the ZZR1100 - more grunt, handles
    better, looks better.

    Have you considered a VFR800 maybe? Pretty versatile bike. And you can
    join the wanker honda crowd :p

  4. And for what its worth, I could have bought the ZX10R but had a good
    think and decided its just too much bike for me. I could never use it in
    its intended role - the ZZR on the other hand does most things well, the
    only time you will struggle a little is hunting down more agile game in
    the hands of competent riders.

    Think about it, if we went by that theory, there would be no bikes

    That's what I'm thinking too. All the press I read on the ZX10R seems to be
    directed squarely at track use.....something mine would almost certainly
    never be exposed to. Don't get me wrong.....I'm quite sure I'd love the
    thing if I got it, but practicality wise, it'd be very much not what I need
    right now. I'm also considering carrying capacity and passenger
    comfort....2 things the ZX10R is likely to be utterly devoid of.

    I'll see if I can get a test ride on a ZZR1200 when I'm in Brisbane shortly.
    Although I'm sure it can't be that much different to my old ZZR1100. Shame
    about the colour though.....I'd really like to be able to get all black.
    Alas, in Aus it's a choice of blue or blue for this year.

    Well, if it's too much bike you could always consider a 600 ... but .. meh
    .... why the hell not go for a ZX10R if you really want one. Perhaps a VFR800
    or a CBR1100XX could be a goer as well. Really depends on what you are
    looking for.

    Remember to factor in suspension rework and a steering damper for the ZX10R
    to make it a truly usable road bike. Still kick ass though.

    why not a zx12r, they are come down heaps in price and they are fairly comfy
    and all that stuff, not as large as zzr1200 and more comfy than a zx10r -
    might be on par with zx10r to insure tho , but then again you could prolly
    pick up a zx12r alot cheaper than a zx10r

    or how about a zx9r - same commenst as per zx12r just cheaper

    retro bike - zrx1200 comfy again and all that stuff , bit cheaper to
    run/insure - assuming you dont mind a unfaired, tho you could get the model
    with the half fairing ??

    this is assuming you want to saty with a kwaka ???

    Nobody "needs" a ZX10 to commute with. Unless you race them its a waste of
    bike.

    The only bad word I've heard used to describe VFR800's is boring. They are
    perfect for the work you describe. Big, comfortable and reliable. Heaps of
    torque and great on the highway. Well worth a test ride if you haven't
    already.

    Not as nimble as the Ninja in the twisties, but thats not the job you asked
    for.

    Well, having recently given the CBR1000RR a good thrash, I've reaffirmed
    my thoughts that there's only one thing it (and its brethren) is good for...

    I wouldn't dream of getting a new litre sportbike to ride on the road,
    _even_ as a weekend toy. Let alone a daily commuter.

    Get something a bit different. A SV1000S, or an Aprilia SL Falco. Or
    even a ZX12R sounds more up your alley.

    I don't think you have to race these bikes to use them and have fun with
    them. They're not quite taking it to "that" level. I'd love a ZX10R but will
    wait till next year before I put my cash down. Yeh, sure, I won't be able to
    use it's capabilities on the road, but I can sure as hell have some fun
    trying!!

    Cam the job he has described here could be done by dozens of more suited
    bikes. A commute to work? He'll put an ugly rack on it so he can carry his
    lunch. The tires will be flatspotted in a month. The engine will be crying
    to get above 8000 revs. Might as well get an old Beemer.

    I just think everyone should stand back, because we know where a ZX10R
    really belongs. The carpark at MY work. ;)

    Well, Bike recently did a review of the ZZR1200 which they recommended for anyone still missing their old
    ZZR1100, if that's any help to you? :)
