Yeah, today is Thanksgiving over here. (Basically, it's just a day to
eat foul and rest up for a big day of Xmas shopping tomorrow.)
But it's kind of a cool holiday. I can't think of another that isn't
religious, pagan, or patriotic. Are there any others?

I suppose New Year's Day doesn't have anything other than temporal
    significance for most

urm, ok, I really didn't spend more than 15 seconds _trying_ to think
    of any.

Agreed. My wife spent her first marriage bringing up three daughters
in New England, and we still do a Thanksgiving dinner for the two, and
their families, that now live over here near us. Xmas without the
furore, and an alternative when in-laws can't agree with whom to spend
Xmas itself. Altogether a good thing.

If you saw the remains on the table afterwards, you'd know it wasn't a
    typo.

Apart from the fact that it involves family :)

Are you saying that thanksgiving isn't patriotic?

Funny though, on Wed night I was watching an episode of West Wing from
season 2, which dealt with the run up to thanksgiving and then Bartlet had
to pardon a turkey. I thought it was all a joke on CJ, but they did it.

Next day: "Obama pardons turkey". Made me laugh.

No, it isn't. It's a family thing. Families get together and eat
turkey. There is almost nothing else involved. Yeah, it started
because some pilgrims survived a year in the wilderness, but there is
no "we're a great country" like you see on the 4th of July. Macy's, a
big shop in New York, throws a giant parade, and there are more sports
    on TV, but that's it.
Art mimics reality. There are stories that Truman was the 1st
President to pardon a turkey, but certainly it's been done every year
since 1989. Somebody in the White House had a sense of humor.

If she had, Nige should be crying over the fact that she moved. It's a
stonking place if you like riding bikes. Brilliant B roads with great tarmac
and not overly leathered in speed cams. At least it was great a couple of
years ago, but I've not been over there since 2008.
