Today I needed to get home to Childmind so wife could take father to
    station.

Sat on bike (B6) and hit the starter....

    and nothing....

    not even a little bit.

As I know next to nothing on such matters I would be grateful for any
suggestions, helpful or otherwise, as to where to start looking.

    Yours

You need to put the key in and turn it to the appropriate position for
your needs, and check the kill switch. Perhaps one of the thingers
has fallen off of the terminals connected to your battery.

Today has been another interesting day...

I work for a large merkican conglom and the works HR and brewery and
    pissup come to mind....

annual preformance review... how pointless is that

I'd like to thank those that replied.

Went back to work to roll bike into loading bay, tried the key and
kill switch but not horn... still not joy.

    New day, new hope.

Out-law father made the train, so it's not all bad news!

Readers of ZATAMM will know that the horn trick is the quickest way of
confirming a well charged battery is properly connected (assuming your
    horn is not FUBAR).

It will not confirm that current from the battery is reaching the
    starter.

If he horn does work (and therefore probably the lights) try the starter
button with the lights on. No dimming of the lights confirms no current
    to the starter.

This could very easily be as BGN suggested just as a result of a blown
fuse. If you can't find a blown fuse then more 'formal scientific
method' armed with a test lamp or even better a multimeter and ideally a
    wiring diagram will be required.
