There is a 14000 miles 1998 model near me going for about £1900. I quite
like it but have read a few stories about the cam chain tensioners letting
go. Is this a common problem should I leave well alone?
Advice from them that know please

    I owned a 1998 VTR from new. I don't regret buying it, but I wouldn't
buy another. It was a bit bland really, didn't do anything that well,
but didn't do anything that badly either. The sort of bike you can own
and then forget about when you're recalling what bikes you owned 15
    years later.

Mine had a water pump replaced under warranty, but I sold it before the
    cam chain tensioners let go.

Mine had a camchain tension job about 1000 miles ago. Turned out it really
didn't need it, had about 1/4 left. Apart from that, it's done it's near
50.000 miles without a (real) problem....

Buy it, you'll like it, but you may find the stock one down on power.

Mine's stage 1 tuned, and has more than enough stomp to keep up with an
    SV1000.

    Cheers
