depends on the bike and the battery I expect.
jaycar. $40 or so for a trickle charger you plug into the wall and it
charges till the battery is topped up, then stops, then starts again
    when needed.

It will take a hell of a lot longer before it goes flat if you disconnect it while the bike is not in use.

Jaycar or Supercheap for a solar panel that plugs into your power outlet.
All you need is a window (won't work with linux)

normal lead acid batteries lose about 1% per day

other gel cell batteries are much much better

getyourself one of these , fantastic thing

it while the bike is not in use.

only if you have an alarm sucking the power

The literature tells you that a lead acid battery will lose 1% of its
capacity per day through self discharge. The literature also tells you that
a lead acid battery must be charged regularly or it looses capacity. I
recommend charging a an idle battery every two to four weeks to maintain it.
Consult your battery manufacturer for details or obtain a commercial charger
mentioned elsewhere and follow the instructions. Make sure that the charger
suits the type of battery that you have. Lead acid batteries come in
flooded (requiring topping up) and sealed (not requiring topping up)
    designs.

  14. Starting the bike and letting in idle for a little while every 3 to 4 days
isnt an option?. Will also make starting easier when your ankle is healed.

Yeah, pretty much :) I tell you what, I'll ride it to Karuah
    for you :)
More explicitly: "Maintenance charger", listed in the 2003
catalog as MB-3527, $65. I've never used one of these, but
    K-mart sell a $50 version (by Projecta, I think) that I've
been using in the shed for years. You just need to add a
long bit of wire and a couple of connectors.

I use MB3518 which is $42, and has the connectors.

It also does 6v which is useful for the baby beemer.

The 3527 doesn't seem to be on the website, I suspect it's been
    superceded by MB3520 or MB3522

MB3503 is the solar charger, grab a cig lighter socket such as PP2007
which clips to the battery and there you are.

As long as it doesn't get nicked of course!

I have a DC power plug connected permanently to the battery and various
items with the matching socket plus a cig lighter socket that can also
conenct to that. So I can plug in the battery charger or the Ipaq, or
the MP3 player, or a spotlight. A permanent connector is useful for a
bike that doesn't get ridden much. Cig lighter ones are too bulky for a
    bike in my opinion.

    BMW say re4charge the battery
1 month if left connected to the bike
2 months if the battery is dissconnected

If you do disconnect the battery, follow the starting ritual after
connecting the battery and turning on th eignition- i.e. operat the
throttle over its full range several times so the brain learns the TPS
    voltages...

This is probably covered on the www.ibmwr.com site .. tons of reading
there while you ankle is mending..
