"Only"? I'd be gutted if I hadn't passed both of those first time. In fact,
I'd have been so gutted, I probably wouldn't have taken them a 2nd time, let
alone another 3 or 4. Poor demented old fucker.

Heh. You are me and I claim my 23 free years of waiting to have
    another go.

Which has been brought up in conversation following recent events.

I think the practical is getting ever more difficult to pass and some areas
are particularly bad. Until recently the pass rate at my nearest test
centre was only about 33%. My son just had his first attempt at another
nearby centre (pass rate 35%) and failed because in the examiner's view he
spent too long in the outside lane of an urban dual carriageway that he had
to join in the outside lane from a flyover. No question of any danger to
other road users. Only a few other minor errors My son's view was that the
traffic in the inside lane was slow-moving and congested and that he was
overtaking within the speed limit. The fact that he is young (23 but looks
much younger) and male may well have played a part. Personally I don't
think that skill alone is the deciding factor these days - age, gender, luck
and how many the examiner has already passed that day/week also have a
    bearing on success or failure.

Are you among the "very few" who found they didn't have their bike
    entitlement on their latest licence?

I have to get a new licence evey 3 years and I never send the old one back
so I can produce a previous one should I ever lose my entitlement through "a
    rare clerical error".

If it wasn't on my latest licence, it would be empty.

I was hinting at my reticence at gaining a car entitlement.

  8. That happened to me years ago. I had to kick up shite with them and
eventually got it re-instated. "Never happened before", they said, which
was a load of cock as it turned out - plenty of people before and since
    had it happen to them.

I now two guys who had to re-take their tests and I made sure that it wasn't
going to happen to me. There does seem to be a fucking lot of "rare cases"
    too.

Living in London for the last 26 years has helped.

Linda's got a licence, but when she last drove a car, Maggie was still
    PM.

    Move to a less ... :)
I can't keep my missus OUT of hers. She's one of those odd birds who'll
*look* for a reason to go out in her car.
She's been taking an unhealthy interest in "Bint-sized-bikes" just lately
too, so I can see a future where she's no longer coming on the back of mine.
