A contact of mine with a K1200LT.... It had a flat battery, and a
    friend offered a jump-start.

Off his truck with a 24v electrical system.....

"The Motronic, the ABS system, all the bulbs......" he said,
mournfully. "Three thousand euros...". He's currently scouring eBay
    for the bits.

Insurance claim then IWHT. I know it seems wierd, I never thought about
claiming for filling a diesel car with petrol (too late by the time I
knew I could) but it's still accidental damage.

I used to work for a very big software company which inhabited an old
country house. One night I had been up in London and was dropped back
into a dark and empty carpark at gone midnight - mine was the last car
in the car park - a rusty D-reg Metro with a decaying charging and
ignition system which meant that when it was damp you often flattened
the battery trying to start it. Which is exactly what happened.

After spending a bit of time swearing and considering trying to bump
start it down the hill (this was before I had a mobile phone or joined
the AA you see) the 24h security guard turned up in his Landrover to see
    what was up.

"Any chance of a jump start?"

"No, we're not allowed to do them any more after we set fire to
    someone's car"

    and off he went again.

This leads me to think that TOG's friend can claim off the 3rd party
    insurance of the truck owner.

I seem to remember that was one of the times I ended up sleeping under
    the desk.

Did they get the polarity wrong too?

I've had both now, 24v truck (me)
    12v car reverse polarity (Bee)

There is a lot to be said for simple bikes.
    BMW - £150ish
    Ducati - £1000ish

Flitwick M/cs rebuilt a Fireblade 1000 engine after a length of that
plastic packing strap stuff wound itself around the front sprocket and
found its way into the gearbox and royally fucked it.

Picking up a hire van on the way to Metter Superbiker in Belgium a few
years back, mad Belgian bloke had to jump start the van and promptly
tried to weld the jump leads on the wrong way wrong. Nice spark
    display.

I'm guessing it or the chain smashed its way through the casing after
getting picked up by the chain and then wrapped round the front sprocket.

    <bodges passim> A horrid CB750 SOHC I acquired that had broken a chain
and holed its casing was fixed by using a few pieces of sheet aluminium
fixed in place with bathroom sealer.

Sounds like the beginnings of a new "Had an accident, not your fault" advert

As I didn't snip a thing from the post I responded to (Scraggy's), I suggest
you re-assess who the TC is.

    Not really, but pretty sure.

    Let's take a look eh?

    Scraggy's post contained this..

    "On Fri, 10 Sep 2010 03:54:44 -0700 (PDT), "TOG@Toil"

    They should form a club."

    My response contained this

And beat the thick **** over the head with it."

So which sentence did I snip?

Otoh the inquisition that the two Steves seem to be running in another
thread at the moment is arguably somewhat unnecessary.

at least it's not every other day like the moronic, 3-way exchanges Bear
instigated with JackH & SteveH in days of yore.

The pair of them will **** off back to one of the car groups soon then
once they've out stayed their welcome there they'll be back.

It's a good job Bear isn't here because by now it would have turned
into a who loses their job most frequently thread.
