    So others have said.

What I also learned today is how to check to see if they were straight.
Lay a piece of glass across the forks. If it rocks they are still not
straight. If it lays flat with no movement they are okay.

    Sounds like fun.

I think we'll come back down the coast on Hwy 1. We've not ridden the
    Oregon parts yet.

Next year we'll go to Colorado and check out the rancho.

That was the plan :). Unfortunately I've just realised that my passport
expires a few days too soon so I now have to get a passport in four
weeks. I doubt that the German bureaucracy is geared up for that...
    Sounds good...

  5. I thought everyone knew that. Alternatively, roll the stanchions across
    the glass.

Better to use the mirror from the bathroom cabinet while your mum's gone
    shopping.
It's easier to see any distortion in the mirrored surface.
And, at least with old-fashioned skinny stanchions, you can straighten them
with three lumps of wood and a big hammer, though it's best to wait until
your bones have healed before trying. :)

It actually expires while you plan to be there, or six months later?
In case you weren't aware of it, they insist that passports are valid
for that length of time after your stay. As a result UK passport
agencies will now renew passports six months or more before expiry but
still give the full ten years validity from expiration date.
The brits in CH manage it, I can't see why the krauts can't.

Putting the glass across the stanchions while mounted allows you to check
that they're correctly aligned in the triple trees, but won't be as much use
proving that they're not a little bent. Rolling them individually on the
    glass checks for straightness.

the passport I got last month is sort of biometric insofar as it has a
chip in it that has your details and picture encoded on it - on
arrival at Faro two weeks back, the 2-or-3 of us on the flight with
such passports were ushered to a seperate - empty - area, and made it
through passport control in about 30 seconds: swipe your own passport,
look into a camera - the software then compares your face with the one
on the chip, and if it's a match, you're through.

on the way back into the UK, no seperate queues for chip-enabled
passport holders, and processing time was around 3-4 minutes per
person cf. 10 seconds for old-style passports.

  11. That is *well* worth knowing, as mine expires in March 2008. I'll renew
it as soon as I get home.

Don't the new biometric passports come in sometime in October? Before
then sounds like an excellent scheme....

Not sure why you want to _not_ have a biometric one, but you're out of
luck anyway. Mine, which was issued in March, is already the new
    style.

Mine, issued in 2005, was I believe towards the end of the machine
readable, but not biometric, editions that they had for a while. It's
good enough for access to the US under the Visa waiver agreement
apparently, so that's fine with me.

  14. Why not give up entirely and apply for British citizenship?

I'd love to see how the bureaucracy copes....

  15. That's also worth knowing. Ta. I've actually got the form and as far as
I can remember it makes no mention of biometrics.

That said, it's my experience that no matter how long the queue is to
get through passport control, you *still* have to wait for your luggage
on the other side. When I fly short-haul, if it's just for a few days, I
don't take hold baggage at all.

Shut up you silly punt. It would be a year before they got the chuffing UK

where, apart from the uk (and a few of its former colonies) does it take
more than 30 seconds to validate a passport?
just put your passport in the microwave for a few seconds. job done.
