How to ruin an afternoon

  1. I have this vision of the entire immigration computer system going up in
smoke and a shower of sparks.

"I'm sorry, Minister. The last word we saw on the screens was 'Geusch'"

  2. Because foreigners don't believe that a simple paper one signed by one
of Her Glorious Maj.'s lackies is real enough to be worshipping us.
They want incontrovertible proof for that. It has nothing at all to do
with British wogs being checked doubly by the immigration before being
let back into the country they call home and maybe even were born in.

  3. It's worth enquiring. I did a lot of embassy passport runs during my
time as a courier and most of those were urgent cases.

Teach a man to fish and he and his pikey mates will have the

I'll try to - the last time they fobbed me off with a temporary passport
that wasn't valid long enough to get into the US, and the regular
one. And the temporary one isn't exactly cheap.

That said, if I can get an "Express Passport" made in Germany I don't
see any reason why the embassy can't do that as well...

    it doesn't - that wasn't my point...

....this was i.e. that they could get it right in a fuckhole like
Portugal and totally screw it up in the UK.

you seem to be under the impression that our passport controls were ever
more efficient than anywhere else. not in my lifetime. the only place
i've ever been that was worse was trinidad, and they were trained to be
    that bad by the brits.

yeah, it was great, actually[1] - I was talking about from a
technology point of view - Portugal are hardly seen as leading edge,
are they, yet they managed to have a decent working e-passport station
implemented before they've even started it at Stansted.

[1] I was pleasantly surprised how "un-Brit" Praia de Rocha was in
general, and the hotel I stayed in - the Oriental - was great.

I certainly prefer Portugal to Spain, away from the main tourist hole at
    least.

Well, Praia de Rocha is a touristy area, but it's much less tacky than
any equivalent place in Spain that I've been to. It helped that we
were staying no-where near the main nightclub area (right on the
Beach, as it happens), and the only "obviously drunk in the morning"
people we saw were a bunch of stripped-to-the-waste frenchmen with
"Allez les Bleus" written on their chests in paint.
