I'm watching 9/11: The Falling Man on C4 and I hadn't realised until
now that a lot of our colonial cousins refused to accept that anyone
    jumped from the towers.

They've just quoted someone as saying "nobody jumped, it was the
draught from the fire forced them through the windows" (1) and it
seems to my simple mind that the poor bastards weren't heroic enough
for the good old US of A.

    (1) Or words to that effect.

I nearly cross posted this but can't be arsed to be cruel to the
    merkins.

These are the same people who refuse to believe there were no WMD in Iraq.

Well, that and from the sounds of it some heavy duty "suicide takes
you straight to hell" philosophy didn't help.

People have survived falls from aircraft - so when the flames were
engulfing the room and given the option of being burned alive or
jumping, jumping may not have been suicide, but the more likely (though
infinitesimally small) way to attempt to save your life.

If you're going to cross post, try something useful like:

    http://www.utileplast.com/utile12.avi

Now that was a great link from ukrm.

Us merkins don't have much of a sense of humor, hell we don't drive on the
proper side, nor do we speak proper English.

    Cheers,

    Bryan

Can't wait for a return trip to the UK.

  9. Sergeant Alkemade, RAF, still (AFAIK) holds the Guinness Book of Records
title for this. Baled out of a burning bomber over Germany in 1943 and
his parachute had been destroyed by the fire.

He fell 20,000 feet or something, crashed through the branches of a pine
tree, and woke up in a snowdrift, effectively uninjured.

    <Googles>

Here, check this out! Two others (at least) have managed the same feat.

Shit, the guy who fell through the roof of the train station must have
    surprised a few travellers....

It has to be said the documentary was measured and powerful; not because
of its subject matter but solely because it wasn't mawkish or sickly.
    Effective because it was understated.

I'm not too sure what it would have been like if it had been commissioned
by a US network given we are now living in a mass media world of creeping
    religious freakery.

It has to be one of the few times I've managed to watch C4 for a full
90 minutes and not feel that they've fucked up a good idea.
How can you make a documentary about something that didn't happen?

  16. I'm sure we'd have heard of any. It would be a remarkable feat,
notwithstanding the other events of the day.
