Howling belt drive?

My GV650C makes quite a howling sound at about 55kph. As best I can
determine this is coming from the belt drive.

    Can this be?

Well, if you say so, I'll believe you.

I must admit that I know nothing about belt drive systems, apart from
one of their claimed advantages is that they are quiet. <shrug>

I was looking at the drive system on a Buell, and was surprised to see
that there seems to be no adjustment point for the back axle, nor is the
idler wheel sprung or pivoted in any obvious way. Didn't seem sensible
to me, but then again, what would I know.

Given the age of your bike, would it be too sensible to suggest a visit
to the place you bought it, and ask them?

    regards,

I googled "howling belt drive" and it seems this is a possibility.
and if it is, then I still need to know if it is normal, benign, or a
    sign of trouble.
The Hyosung had got rear axle adjustment.
Yep, that's what I'll do. But I wanted to see what the brains trust
here had to say as well.

Is there an idler on the Hyosung? Is it spring loaded? If it is then
that's the perfect set-up for strange, unpredictable harmonic
aberrations at discrete belt travel speeds. Ask anyone running big
industrial belt drives - many an hour has been wasted trouble shooting
noisy belt drives where the eventual culprit has been found to be just
that. The fix involves removal of the springing mechanism, and
adjusting tension until the noise goes away.
I'm not saying this is the issue here, it's just that the problem has
triggered a few memory cells in non bike related situations.
Good. I'd be interested in the outcome of such a visit.

My first thought is that this would be a change the dealer made to the
motorcycle to better match it with the rider but then I figured you started
wailing long before you hit 55. ;-)
    Karma?
    Stretch?... New bike and all.

I think you're right, the stock belt idler is not sprung. Buell mounted
the front belt pulley as near to the swingarm pivot as possible to
minimise the difference in belt length given varying swingarm positions.

There is a chain conversion kit for the GV650!

    Snipped from <http://www.alternativecruisers.com/index.php?topic=

What are the advantages of the chain conversion over the belt drive?

Problem solved. On the interweb I found information which suggested
that drive belts can howl when they are tenioned too tight. So I
checked the manual and deduced how to check the tension. Bingo! It
was too tight. So I loosened it to the correct tension and went for a
ride. Bingo! Howling gone. One happy boy here. :)

You won't believe what I had to do to get at the tensioning nut/bolt
arrangement on the exhaust pipe side.

I needed an open ended spanner with a ~70deg offset (which I didn't
have) so I took to a ring spanner with an angle grinder and made me
one. Even then I could only turn things 1/12 of a turn at a time. The
only other option was to remove the exhaust system and THAT was going
be complex (and something I was NOT in the mood for.)

Not at all. Just a guy who wants to have a beer with you, find out
what your REAL NAME is, check it out against Vietnam war records and
in so doing, possibly expose an imposter.

    That's all. Nothing serious... :)

  15. Okay, Sorry Nigel, but this is important I reply to Gerry.

AS I have said to you before on many occasions Gerry
I do not have to prove to you or anyone where I have been or who with
Just because I call a fruit a cantaloupe and you call it a rock melon
I call it a suitcase, you call it a port.
I called a piece of clothing a sarong, which is what I knew it then and
    still know it as now
You on the other hand, decided that you didn't call it by that name
or you hadn't seen anyone wearing such a thing as a sarong and therefore,
you expect everyone to believe what you say is correct ?
I am not and never been a glory hunter and do not dwell on the past
    as you appear to
When you allegedly threw medals away and therefore,
You threw away any recognition of any involvement with whoever it was who
    gave you the medals.
    But all that aside
I do not have to prove anything to you or anyone else.
I do not have to tell you if George Winston Frost is my real name or not
You apparently go by a few different names yourself,
Other newsgroup users have accused you of harassing them
I could do the same thing Gerry
I have lived my life without your involvement up to a year or so ago without
any disturbances and that situation is not going to change

    Okay Nigel
    Back to normality
    Finished

This is not just about the sarong thing. You made other mistakes
which one who was there would not have made. Little seemingly
innocent mistakes but which one who was there would not have made.
No, George, in the little you have said about your alleged time in
Vietnam, you have made too many verbal mis-steps for my liking. You
    just don't gel.

You would not be the first person who I've caught out pretending to be
a Vietnam veteran. There are literally thousands of Vietnam veteran
imposters in Australia alone. In the US there are tens of thousands.
Stangely enough they are always staunch patriots who (for obvious
reasons) are extremely reticent to provide sufficient information to
    verify their status.

You don't have to reveal anything about yourself, George, you just
have to get one (just one) member of the AATTV Association, maybe the
secretary, maybe a mate who is not afraid to say who he is, maybe a
reputable member of OzMoto (Nigel for isntance), who is prepared to
    vouch for your bonafides.[1]
No you don't. And I don't have to believe your flimsy, inaccurate,
    highly suss story.
You already have, George. I couldn't find a GWF listed anywhere in
the register of those who served in Vietnam, and when you were
challenged about that previously you TOLD us that it was not your real
    name.
I don't think I have "harrassed" anyone who didn't have it coming to
    them.
Fair enough. But you won't mind if I continue to express my doubt
about your Vietnam veteran status until I get some satisfaction (see
    [1] above), will you?

Now, about that beer... I'm happy to fly down there to shout you a
beer or two at any Melbournian Ozmoto Meet of your choice, and then we
can all play "I'll show you mine if you show me yours." Come on
George, don't be shy... Waddya say... The truth will set you free.

  19. Only in your little mind Gerry

You are wrong there Gerry, you have not "caught me out "

    There you go again
    Glory hunting pretend hero
"Look at me, I have chased these imposters and caught them !!""

Go chase your medals Gerry, get down on your knees and plead for them to be
    given back
I doubt that any serving member or ex member to welcome you with open arms
after they hear you threw them away, literally discrediting them and their
units and what they fought for.
Never met any of them Gerry, have only come across pretend heros like
    yourself

They got there in August, we had already left by then

One of the ones who went with me ?
Sorry Gerry, they are all dead

    Why pick on Nigel ?
he is not a friend of mine nor I would suspect, he would want to be

This is only in your little mind Gerry..

George W Frost is the name I go by here and that is all that counts

What name or names do you go by in other groups Gerry?

I am not pretending to be a Vietnam hero
unlike you Gerry, who has allegedly, thrown away medals supposedly earned

Go tell that to copter Bob or whoever he is called and others in that that
group you brought here complaining about your behaviour there.

    I am already free Gerry
