HT Leads - how?

  1. Fitted Dynacoils and leads to the Turbo yesterday to try and cure the
    rough idle and low speed stalling[1]. Taking the very old leads off I
    noticed they were the usual copper cores, but fitting the new leads had
    me puzzled. The inner core looks to be nylon strands with some kind of
    flexible sheath surrounding them. It's not obviously metal, but I guess
    it must be a conductor? It's very flexible, just like thin string in
    fact, anybody know what the sheath is made out of - or covered in to
    conduct?


    [1] No idea if it's worked yet due to flat battery

  2. I'd guess it's impregnated with graphite or similar, but who
    knows? Something resistive to cut down on RF emissions probably. These
    days it could be carbon nanotubes (especially if it was expensive!).

  3. I do, but before I bought the bike the seller "acquired" the Kawasaki
    tool to set it properly, and it made no difference to the idle. It'll
    idle fine at 1500, but below that it just stalls whether hot or cold.
    Checking the plugs they're sooty and a bit wet and the spark isn't great
    anyway, so Dynacoils were on the cards anyway. I'm not sure the coils I
    took off were original fitment as they have a weird spacer arrangement
    on them, saved me making spacers for the Dynacoils, as they went
    straight on.

    Well nearly. I dropped one of the electric connectors into the cylinder
    head. Aha, thinks I, at last, a reason to use my magnet-onna-stick.
    Imagine my disappointment when I found that the connector wasn't
    magnetic :-( Took ages to fish out.

    Battery has been on charge overnight, so I'll fire it up later and see
    if there is any improvement. If not item 250086945727 may be on the
    cards if the price stays low.

  5. The jury is still out on the coils, I must have had dodgy connections as
    I couldn't get a spark on 2-3, by the time I'd fixed that the engine was
    well and truly flooded. Try again tonight.

    Pah.

    Well it runs a lot better lower down the rev range than it did, but it
    hasn't cured the stalling at idle. It's made it easier to detect, now
    it's a more sudden deceleration, just like something like the TPS has
    said "ok, less fuel please" so I'm going to be bidding on that set, at
    least while it stays reasonably priced.

  7. Yeah, I went to 35 and lost out. I reckon it was an esnipe bid that got
    me.

    All is not lost, I still have the trusty multimeter checks to do.
