My son in Melbourne maintains a Vic and a WA licence. Has done for 14
    years, since he moved there.

And yes, he got the Vic licence by presenting his WA one.

If you walk into RTA NSW "today" and apply to transfer a NSW licence,
they will take your QLD licence (or any other Australian licence). In
the process of transferring to a NSW licence you are declaring (and
have provided documentary evidence) that you now reside in NSW (and
    therefore don't reside in Qld).

Likewise when renewing, you are declaring that you reside at a NSW
    address.

Any exceptions to that are just that..exceptions/oversights or from a
different era... but that does not make it legal, nor defensible or
    untraceable.

Makes sense, I didn't think they were that smart. What odds will you
give me that if you hand your NSW licence in in WA today for a WA one,
you won't get a future renewal from the NSW RTA?

It still seems bizarre that they can declare your Qld moped licence
invalid but not provide you with a NSW moped licence.
I reckon I'd be riding there on my moped, acting dumb and just being
hard to get along with until they give me a proper replacement! (mind
you I'd do it long before the 3 months are up)

You don't have a moped licence, anymore than a NSW car licence holder
    has a people-mover licence.

It just happens that NSW allows you to drive a bus that's only got 8
    seats on your car licence.

    So, what else is new
you act dumb all the time
You are hard to get along with all the time
Pity they don't give brain replacements

    In WA 12.
A motor vehicle with a gross vehicle mass not greater than 4.5 tonnes
and constructed or equipped to seat no more than 12 adults (including
    the driver).

    And whilst I was there:---

    Just visiting?
    Visiting drivers include:

    tourists

people on business trips, working-holidays or studying or working
    temporarily in WA
As a visitor you can drive on your interstate licence for up to 12
months from your arrival or until the licence expires (whichever comes
first). If you intend staying longer than 12 months you should apply
    for a WA licence.

There are no 8 seat buses, buses are defined as having 12 seats or more.

You have a licence that your state's rules say "can do this".

you go to live somewhere else, and by the goodness of their hearts
they say "OK, you don't have to prove you can do some stuff, so we
won't make you do the L-plate and P-plate dance. But hey, we require
anyone who rides a 2 wheeled thingo to do things you clearly haven't
done, so if you wanna ride one then you go and do them".

Because it's not a "moped licence" it is a driver's licence with
    conditions.

Is this a rehash of that stupid "only some of the classes count" stuff?
With a Qld "C" class licence I have a licence to "drive" the following:

Car [not more than 4.5 t GVM built to carry not more than 12 adults
    including the driver]
Moped [motorbike 50 mL or less with top rated speed of not more than 50
    km/h]

Where does it say it's a car licence that suffers mopeds so long as they
don't cause trouble? THIS is the licence Qlders would seek if they wanted
to be licenced for a moped.

Just because the NSW licence is also called "C" doesn't mean it's an
automatic replacement and the moped bit doesn't count!

I'd be screaming blue murder are demanding a bike licence (or a free test or
whatever I could get by being difficult) if it was me.
(And no; it unlikely it would ever be me)

I don't know the finer details, he sometimes lurks in ausmoto
so there's every chance he'll buy in to the conversation himself
at some point, but from what I understand he then served out
the remainder of the original suspension 'on foot'. I don't know
if there were any additional consequences for going and getting
    another license.

Me, I'm finding that getting trains and buses around is a nice
change. It adds a whole new perspective on stuff that I'd
completely missed. I'm going to different places, hanging out
with different people, doing different things, having a ball.
I bought one of those little netbooks and now I get a full
hour of writing in on the train trip to/from work every day!
Can't do that when you're driving/riding! What really struck
me as interesting is that right now I have no idea what the
price of petrol is, and I actually don't care!

Please pay attention Clem, the problem is that mopeds don't exist in NSW.

You try it and see, you ride down to the border, and, as you cross the
    border on a moped, it magically vanishes! <poof> <cloud of smoke!> ;-)

In it's place, a small motorcycle appears, still with under 50 mL
capacity, and still fairly slow, but, never the less, a motorcycle.

Theoretically, you could ride it down to my corner, and, carefully, ride
straight into South Aus, since mopeds do exist in SA.

It's a bit more traumatic for people who live outside the metro areas.
No licence for me would mean stay home. Nearest train station is 40
kms away. There's a bus stop 2 klicks away and it is serviced by one
or two buses a day. Nearest place I can get a newspaper is 10 klicks.
A licence suspension for city folk is just a mild inconvenience, for
country people it's home detention. Sure I chose to live where I am
but it hardly seems fair to non-urban people.
