doesn't the Zumo have it's own battery?

The requirement for an external power source is the main drawback of my
2610. The BMW power socket on my bike is always powered, unlike later
CANBUS models, but it would be nice to be able to use the GPS whilst having
a coffee or even on foot.

Like wessie, I have a 2610 (i know your follow-up is to Colin) which has
to be powered by the bike or mains lead. Since getting this (ebay a
couple of months ago) I have seen the Zumo 550 on a couple of friends'
bikes and it's lovely piece of kit - though seriously expensive.

Yes it does, but it asks you (when you switch off external power)
whether you want to continue on battery power or switch off. I can't
be bothered to wait for it to ask and then have to hit a button to
    answer.

    you impatient old git :)

I now have it in my mind that at home, when making breakfast, you rant at
the kettle & toaster for taking too long.

How do you hear the thing? Are you using earplugs as well? I couldn't hear
mine above 50mph so I gave up on the audio.

The Zumo will remember the destination even if it gets switched off.

I take the head unit off the bike when I park up anyway, so no need to
    turn it off as such.

Something like that wouldnt look out of place on a bike like mine, so
    that's what I'll get.

I can hear it fine at 90 even with earplugs. The volume is speed
sensitive so it gets louder as you go faster. I have found that if I'm
listening to radio with the volume turned right up when I first turn
the Scala on, the satnav requires me to adjust the volume up again on
the Scala headset when that is turned on also. It stumped me a bit at
first because I thought the Scala headset would only go so loud when I
was turning the volume up for the radio, but it adjusts to even louder
when you turn the Zumo 550 on.

That would mean buying even more from a BMW parts supplier.

The danger with this is that you'll leave stuff plugged in and forget to
    turn it off.

I took my BMW up to the lockup last weekend, left an iPhone charger and
my NavMan charger plugged into the 3-way socket under the seat, which is
    wired direct to the battery.

When I went to get it on Friday, it needed a jump start from the Ducati.

It allegedly has a low voltage sensor to stop it flattening your
battery. I can only assume the calibration is shite.

I don't have stuff to leave plugged in - except the Zumo, which will
never get left on the bike for more than a few minutes.
