I guess I should count this as progress...

    After some more fiddling I actually managed to start the FrankenXL250. As
    bad as the donor engine looks it seems to be running OK, no untoward noises
    or somesuch.

    However it looks like the rev counter isn't working and by the time I tried
    to work out if it was at the engine end or the rev counter itself (which
    wouldn't be a big deal as I've got a NOS one somewhere) I couldn't get the
    barsteward to restart. Oh arse.

    Looks I now have pretty much reliable sparks and compression with dodgy fuel
    supply. Try as I may I can't get the engine to flood (even deliberately) so
    it looks like it now doesn't want to fire because it doesn't get enough
    petrol.

    Oh well, I wanted to check the carb anyway and swap out the fuel tap for a
    non-leaky one...
