    MX-5's a total loss.

    *sigh*

Hadn't even had it a year. I'd done the cambelt, water pump, fitted
remote locking, overhauled the brake calipers, new suspension dust
covers, new pads, just MOT'd with new brake pipes, brand new
mohair/glass window roof, fixed the slow leccy windows, HT leads, plugs,
    oil, filters yada yada.

    All gone to pot.

    Rear-ended yes?

Just insist they restore the vehicle or replace it with one in
    equivalent condition.

They'll try to get you to take cash.

    You don't have to.

If you want a project MX6, I know where there's one going. Free to
good home, all parts to fix for MOT.

Yes. I thought Mrs. TOG was having it?

    Condition, mileage, spec? Price?

    And more importantly, colour?

That's what I thought too - hairdresser's car etc. It was for SWMBO
    after all.

I didn't like it at first, no character. But then I realised it's
actually a lot of fun to drive. SWMBO got much less use of it in the end.

Also, at over 100,000 miles it feels (felt) like new.

Really? I didn't know that. Can I insist it gets repaired even though
they say (at least initially) that it will cost more than it's worth?
They say 'bent chassis' but that's not with a thorough inspection - he
just looked under it while it was on the drive. Thing is, I know this
car's a good one. Almost no rust. AIUI it's getting harder to find a
    decent Mk1 now.

She loved it, but in the end it wasn't practical enough.
Pretty decent, around 105k but it's had a replacement engine - the
previous engine had the usual nose job failure. It's a UK spec 1.6
G-Plater so apart from four wheels and 'leccy windows there is no
spec. According to the MOT man it has had extensive welding, but a
little bit of it may need redoing before the next MOT. Got something
like 11 months MOT left on it as well, plus it's just got a new
taxdisc. Oh, and it comes with a hardtop as well. Plus it's had <thinks>
very recent brake disks, uprated brake pads, braided hoses, GAZ
coilovers and some tuning bits fitted that I could take off again.

Price depends a little on what you'd want with the car but we'd be
looking at the 2 grand mark. I'm not in a hurry to sell it as it's a
good cheap runabout but on the other hand the size of my car fleet is
getting a bit out of hand. In fact, I'm tempted to take it to the
Provence at the end of the month as it'd be a lot cheaper and possibly
    more fun than the alternatives.
Various shades of red, as they're prone to. Oh, and a white hardtop.

Alternatively, have a look at the for sale section on
http://www.mx5nutz.com/ - very friendly bunch and there are always
decent cars for sale there if you're prepared to wait a little.

Pulling it straight, if it is bent, isn't a major job, there's
bodyshops all over the UK with the jigs to do it.

WUN is right, you can insist they restore your car to pre-accident
condition, it is your car, not there's, to say what happens to it. A
mate's mum had her 1986 Escort Ghia rear end repaired by the insurance
at her insistence, because the rest of the car was immaculate and the
offer they made wouldn't have got her anywhere near the same quality of
    car.

I had a Renault 19 jigged after a substantial rear end shunt. The car
should have been re-shelled really, but due to (I think) it being a
lease car this option was briefly explored then discarded.

The finished article was utter shite, the gap around the rear tailgate
was wide enough to get your thumb in all the way round, and the parcel
shelf just fell through into the boot as the back of the car was about
2" wider than it should have been. When they baked the paint they
cooked the electronics, which left it with an intermittent cutting out
fault which took 2 years to solve.

12 months after the repair whilst washing the car I noticed a strange
brown mark above the wheelarch. I poked it with my finger, which went
    straight through the bodywork.

It was the most horrendous bodge I have ever seen, but as it was a
company car I had to endure it until the lease ran out, which included
2 trips to France with the bastard thing cutting out every few miles.

Then, there was my Laguna which got rear ended, which I insisted was
taken to a Renault approved bodyshop, rather than the insco's preferred
repairer. The repair was faultless, the car returned to me as new.

Same for my 1960 Morris 1000 convertible that was rear ended in 1992.
Insurers wanted to write it off, insisted it was repaired.

My 1968 Alfa Romeo was rammed in the side whist parked, by a pick-up doing a
    3-point turn.

The pickup driver (a neighbour of my parents) had left a note admitting it
was his fault, and his ins co tried to get out of paying as their standing
instruction tell their customers not to admit liability.

We threatened to take them to court, my ins co not being interested as it
was only TPF&T, and they just ignored me.

Then I started to hire a replacement car every weekend (train commute during
the week) and sending them the bills. After 3 weeks they made a silly cash
offer to write-off, which I refused and reminded them that the car had an
agreed value of £7k supported by documentation from the AROC. Two weeks
later they agreed to the car being repaired by repairer of my choice, from a
list supplied by AROC, and it was back on the road within a month. They
even paid a subsequent bill for new carpets and rear speakers that had been
water damaged due to rain getting it during the delay.

    A few lessons learnt:
    - make a lot on noise and the ins co will finally take the easiest way out
    to get rid of you.
    - it is possible to get a hired Vauxhall Carlton around a AROC Sprint event
at North Weald in the non-Alfa class faster that a Ferrari, if you're brave
    enough.

Standard response to anyone owning/driving an MX-5, but it doesn't alter the
fact that they're a good bus. reliable as **** and with a little of the "old

Does this insco not know about Car-o-liner's or Dataliner?. A morning on a
jig with a good operator will have most "write-off's" as straight as a die.

There ARE some shite garages though and it'd take a **** lot of heat to fry
the electrics, so the painter either couldn't operate a booth, or the booth
was left on bake for too long. That doesn't happen at the smaller
independants, because booth heating costs a fortune, so the minimum time on
bake is the economic way to go. And also the best as it happens.
That's another thing lots of people aren't aware of. THEM telling the
insco's where the car/bike will be repaired. Not *asking* them, but telling
them. The insco's have their preferred garages, but wgaf about what the
    insco's prefer?

The ins co sent their preferred repairers round to collect my Boxster
(I knew their preferred repairers and was happy for them to fix it).

They promptly phoned me back and said they didn't touch Porsches, what
    did I want to do?

Looked up local approved repairers and gave them their details but the
ins co were a LOT less helpful, letting me make the arrangements to get
    the car taken there.
