You can be banned from driving in any country but it won't have an impact
on your driving at home unless there is a reciprocal agreement.

If you're banned in France for example, you're not banned in the UK. However
I believe that if you're banned in the UK, then you're banned from everywhere.
I believe that there are agreements in place between the RoI and the UK.

They've just introduced the points system in Belgium recently. 12 points
    I believe.

    In Spain, IIRC it's 24.

So much for harmonisation within the EU. Heheheh.
Urm, I believe it's 20 points in Italy with bonus points for every year you're
good up to a max of 30 points.

True, but you're talking about a workaround. Your mate banned in the UK, was
in effect banned everywhere else on his UK licence. He only got around that
    by getting a Jersey licence.

Those are merit points. I was talking about demerit points. You can be
disqualified by losing your merit points or gaining too many demerit
    points.

Either way, the trip through Italy was great fun.

Until Malta joined the EU I had a Maltese bike and car licence waiting
in the wings in case of a ban.

Heh. I (still) like the story of the English guy stopped on the
Autostrada in Italy for *eek* taking the piss speed.

The bloke in the quick carabinieri car pulled him over, and the bloke
got out with his best pidgen Italian, saying he "didn't speak the
    lingo".

"that's ok sir, I speak perfect English" replied he [1]

    Paul.

[1] Carabinieri officers are part of the military, and are (on the
    whole) very well educated :)

They won't give a flying ****, unless you're driving on the pavement
at reckless speeds. You can drive however you like between towns.

This is the motherland of the fast car. On the Autoroutes, it wouldn't
be beyond the realms of possibility that the cops would stop you for
going too slowly in a sports car, on the grounds you don't deserve to
    be driving it.

They /love/ their cars and bikes there. but not as much as football.
    The fruitloops.

Last time I had any dealings with the Italian police I had to converse
    in French
as it was the only language in which we were both fluent(ish).
A Lingua Franca, you might say.

On the last trip they stopped me I now reckon to see what exhausts I
had, seemingly approved they were akros, and told me to piss off.

Someone posted a while back, a link where one could get hold of a
licence from another EU country to help them avoid silly things like
bans, passing tests, etc. Malta was one of the countries, IIRC.
