See it's all down to how you describe it to the burd in the first place,

Much better vision in the second picture, for one thing.

 

As we were being led around the track, and the instructor was very
cautious around that corner neither were particularly quick. I just
let a gap open up on the second one so I could have a more natural
swing at it.

I think he was being cautious on that corner because it is actually
slightly off-camber. And you'd already been on the grass once
