I went to church on Sunday

I felt a bit like the kid from the Omen but it was a christening with a big
party afterwards so I went dutifully along with the wife and kids.

I watched the proceedings with the same curious interest that I would tribes
in the jungle bouncing round a totem pole on the discovery channel when
something in the sermon about the ten commandments caught my ear.

TWO: 'You shall not make for yourself a carved image--any likeness of
anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that
is in the water under the earth.'

....but he was standing underneath a large cross with a dead Arab on it.

    Can someone explain?

Look up Puritans, you'll probably find they're the only ones who adhered
    to that commandment.

And possibly one or two Jews... and probably Phil's mob too.

I must confess that the rest of the commandments came as a bit of a shock.
Got me, bang to rights, on most of them.

This is usually phrased as "You shall not worship false idols".
That dead Arab is the whole point of it all.
The bloke in seat CC99 on Saturday 6th September at 3pm. If you ask
    him.

  10. Does anybody get a strange feeling when stood outside a church that they
    *really* shouldn't go in?

    Or is it just me?

No. Though I'm atheist, there are a large number of churches that are
    magnificent buildings.

  12. I'm totally agnostic, verging on athiest but nearer to "couldn't give a
toss"ist and feel exactly the same.

I don't like going into churches (of any religion) so if I can avoid, I
do. My ex's parents couldn't comprehend this whenst we were in New York
and they wanted to go into every Church they walked past.

Nah, can't be arsed. Basically there were quite a lot of different
'arab' tribes around in the area long before the religions were
established. That makes 'em all the same in my book.

And do you really think I'd give the story of Abraham any credence?

I don't mind going in them, but I'm getting increasingly less
comfortable attending any sort of service. Weddings I can cope with,
as long as they don't go on too much about godstuff, but christenings
    really get to me.

So much so that I made it quite clear I wouldn't attend the church
part of the christening of some good friends' kids a few years back,
only to find later that they'd wanted Jude and myself to be
    god-parents. Whoops!

Trouble is, I'd quite happily have been a god-parent if it weren't for
all this swearing to bring them up in the church business. I mean, if
I'm lying about part of it, what's the point of saying any of it?

No, but as an evangelical atheist I think the Romans had the
right idea about how to treat Christians. The Romans' idea of
god worshipping was to get drunk, eat too much, vomit and have
lots of sex (although they weren't too choosy about gender or
even species). Sounds like a plan especially if bikes can be
    introduced into the mix.

Oh, c'mon. Who gives a toss what religion they followed - they're the
    same people regardless.
    Nope. It doesn't.
