Icelandic eruption

They're flying VFR (Visual Flight Rules), and in uncontrolled airspace.
So, they're unaffected by "UK airspace being closed". It's their call.

Personally, given that the ash is forecast to the surface, I'd have some
concerns about air filters getting blocked or windscreens being damaged.
    But it's their call.

  2. Afair, the pax were reasonably well behaved.

  3. Some geologist was on this morning saying it was parts of the glacier
falling into the volcanic rift and causing steam explosions, driving the
    dust to highish altitude.

I suspect the ash clouds, by the time they get over the UK, are dilute
enough to not cause engine problems, but the airlines are justifiably
concerned about paint and windscreen damage from millions of
sandblasting particles. Not much point doing a normal day's flying then
having each plane out of service for an indeterminate period for
    inspection and repairs.

According to an article in a German paper, air travel is likely to be
    affected until Saturday.

That's going to be interesting with all the backlog, there'll be the
    self-loading cargo stacked everywhere. Gah.

Probably longer, all of the planes are in the wrong place to get started.
Bristol and Cardiff are landing flights destined for Birmingham and
northwards and scratching around for busses to take the passengers onward.
Even if the volcano stops erupting and/or the upper winds change direction
it is going to take a fair while to get the planes and crews positioned
    to restart flights.

Yeah, sounds like they're going to SBB/TGV/Eurostar it back tomorrow.

All their own fault really, since there was no good reason for them not
to fly back yesterday evening. Ho hum.

NATS are now saying it is "very unlikely that the situation over England
will improve in the foreseeable future".

    Oops.

Can passengers sue the Icelandic government? They don't have any money but
we can take our fish back.

Does this mean that the politicos can't get to Manchester?

Strangely, USA and Canada flights are getting out of Gatwick, presumably
by using more southernly routes and extra fuel stops.

Hmm, not that I know of - we're in Gamston though, so don't know
    Tollerton that well.
    :-o

It's officially now Nottingham City Airport, but really is just for
private lessons etc. All will be bulldozed if the brainless scheme to
move Notts Forest to a new stadium get the go-ahead.

I liked the comment on one of the flying groups "No Iceland, we said
    send us your *cash*."

Oh yes they were, the flight Sarah was mean to be on Left Gatwick at
12;22, and other flights got off to Orlando and Vegas.
