Ideal Bike For Ex-125 Riding Big Bike Newbie :-)

    They are fairly scarce. I always stop and chat whenever I encounter
    one. The other rider is usually delighted to find another 'S'.

    What sort of mileage do you have on yours? I maybe have a viewing poss on
    one with 23K on it but this seems high for a 2001 bike.

    Suzuki SV650.

    I started out on a TS50, then had an RS125. I moved on to the SV after
    that and kept it for three years. It's great in town - quite narrow,
    so excellent for filtering, and the engine lets you nip around without
    fuss. Throw it at some back lanes and it's surprisingly capable and a
    real hoot. It'll cruise[1] at a good 80 on Mways.

    As for running costs, it's pretty good on petrol, reasonably easy to
    service yourself[2], parts should be easy to find now - the model has
    been out a good while and is still current. I got one because it was
    cheap to insure (much cheaper than the sports 600s).

    At the very least find one and give it a test ride. If you've any

    [1] and by that I mean in a not-buzzing way, nicely in the midrange not
    up near the redline.
    [2] Minor services are fine, I got a knowledgeable mate in to help with
    stripping the forks and putting heavier oil in, and again for a
    semi-major service.

    3,500 in 2 and a half months. Sounds like it may have been used for
    commuting. What sort of nick is it supposed to be in?

    Just over 15k, of which I've done around 4 in the last 3 months.
    The last owner did 250 miles in a year! But it is particularly low
    milage for a '98 model.

    Hi All,

    Just a quick intro and then onto business. I'm Dan, 21 years old and haven't
    ridden a bike for about 3 1/2 years. I started off on a Honda MT50 (great
    fun if not a little slow), and then spent a year on a Suzuki RG125 (nice
    bike, even if it did sound like a lawnmower on speed!). As soon as I was old
    enough I got a car, which I wrote off a few months ago, and now have another
    car (would've got a bike but don't have my licence), but am feeling the pull
    of the 'dark side' more than ever.

    So, two questions for everybody:

    Firstly, I'm not sure what bike to get when I get my licence (aiming to do a
    one week intensive direct access course with 1st BMF in Portsmouth). I am
    looking at getting something that will last me for a while (as opposed to
    getting something small and working my way up), something without a fairing
    (cheaper insurance, and less to damage when some tit knocks it over!), and
    most importantly of all, something that's cheap to insure and has good parts
    availability (I want to run the car & bike as it's no fun riding to work at
    5am in the pouring rain - as I'm sure you all know). I'm looking favourably
    at the Bandit 600 (unfaired), but wondered if anyone else has any
    recommendations. Preferably a bike that's at home both in the city and being
    slung around the back roads.

    Secondly, I built up 2 years no-claims with my previous bikes, if I could
    remember my insurers (and get proof of NCB) would that still be valid if I
    were to pass my full test and get another bike.

    sposed to be good nick but that is a lot of miles to start out with, think
    I'd rather pay a little more for lower miles... if I can find one

    But it's not as if you are going to add a lot more, is it? And
    reliability is unlikely to be an issue. So is it the resale value that
    you are thinking of?

    I'll prolly do about 8K per year, so if I did wanna change in say 2 years
    that'll be a hard to shift 40K bike.
