Do you know how to interrogate the ECU?

Certainly do. But you do need a few bits of exotic interface kit and bloody
expensive software. Why did you think I asked if you needed to sell it
cheap? The thieving dealers will charge you about £80 just to read the fault
codes. And then they bend you over by trying to fix the fault by replacing
each and every bit until it's sorted. All at your expense too because many
dealers simply don't understand the basics of the injection/ignition system.

I really would rather keep the bike, but there is no point if I cant get it
    running properly.
A fortune has been spent on it so far, Mistral Ti cans & X-over, Stucci
bellypan, PC111, plates to make the cans high-level, new fuel pump etc etc
    etc.

Now I think I understand why it only had 5300 miles on it when I bought it,
struggled to just over 6k now mind.

I am thinking along the lines of the coils failing when they get hot, you
think im on the right line ?

Nope. You'd be better off looking at things like fuel pump/ECU relays. Coils
are pretty much indestructible unless they are Marelli or magnetek items.

Fuel pump failed and has been replaced (cross referenced to pump from older
model BWM car) and the relays have all been changed for sealed units. I
tried swapping the relays after the bike cuts out but it makes no
    difference.

The bike cuts out instantly with no warning, spluttering or otherwise. All
seems well then just as you wind it on there is a sudden silence.

Its a real PITA to try and diagnose as it rights itself after a few mins.

You really do need to get the ECU fault codes read and preferably get a
realtime log of the various data channels too. This can help immensely with
diags of such problems.. You are simply pissing money up the wall doing
    things any other way.

Had an XT (660R) before the Bandit. Excellent bike for town and back roads,
less good on the faster stuff. Real character, though.

I like the look of it, however KTM are doing some great deals on the
    640 adventure traveller.....

As I'm buying three of them, i might get a good deal too.

The XT seems rather expensive which is a shame.

heh - the reason I take a long time to make my mind up is because I
tend to keep my bikes/cars for a long time.
well, if you don't take other people's views on board, how do you
    actually do your research?
