Yes, there were definitely times I was scared, especially when water was
running low, and I still couldn't see the next checkpoint I realised
this event can go quickly from being a 'race' to 'survival' and for many
it did. This year there was a record number of intravenous drips given.

However, as part of the compulsory kit was a large flare, we always knew
that if it got to it, we could send up a flare and although that
signalled the end of our race, it did mean that medcial attention
wouldn't be too far away, either by helicopter or by land rover.

However, this also assumes that one knows how to use a flare as an
American guy managed to burn his friend in the bollocks when his flare
went off at the wrong angle! Who needs enemies when you've friends like
    that! ;-)

Because he had about 40 packets of pepperami noodles in his pack that he
hadn't bothered to crush up, plus about 30 pepperamis. No wonder his
stomach played up, but then it did give us all something to talk about
as he described his bowel movements in quite graphic detail.

Noooooo, not more sand! One of the guys in my tent rang his wife on a
satelite phone half way through the event. She didn't get quite the
reaction she'd expected from him when she was enthusiastically telling
him that she'd just booked a holiday cottage right by the beach!

Reminds me of a time in Cowes harbour on the boat of the father of a
girlfriend[1] when, on the last day of Cowes week, out of date flares
are set off like fireworks. Mother of GF was handed a flare, pulled the
rip cord and nothing happened (by design, not that she knew this). She
tilted the flare downwards. to "see what had happened", and off it went
almost horizontal through the rigging of neighbouring boats towards the
    shore.

A short while later fire-engines could be seen and heard on the Island.

We read in the local paper next week that it had penetrated a hotel room
window and set the place on fire. Luckily nobody was hurt.

[1] apostrophes - who needs 'em?

  15. A little bit.
Good grief - no need for apologies.
You're lost for words? I still don't quite understand why you did it
but very well done anyway. The photos give a small flavour of how awful
    the terrain must have been.

When's the appointment with your psychiatrist? ;-)

Unfortunately, I won't be able to run in the marathon afterall :-(
I've had a stomach upset this week, perhaps due to all this good food
I'm now eating! I'm a bit upset about it because my legs and feet feel
up to it and I was really interested to see how I would do.

The good side is that I get to spend quality time with friends and
family that have been sorely neglected over the last couple of months.

Did you have to take malaria pills whilst out there? If so, you'll
probably find the stomach upset and the pills are linked.

Nope. Apparently it's not the season. Plus, there wasn't an awful lot of
standing water where we were so malaria tablets not required. I only
felt ill after being back in the UK for 48 hours which is why I
suspected it might be the change of food from pot noodles to fresh food.

Anyway, for the time being I'm back on the pot noodles!
