Took the new '09 R1 out today.

It is *fucking* quick. I had to wimp out and take it out of A mode and
    put it to standard.

Im sure that you could get used to it, but im not sure I see the point
of that much power on a road bike, especially over here.

Still, new K10 Suzuki's come out this year, have to see what the 750 is
    like.

OTOH the low down grunt is simply stunning, and the bike weighs in at
**** all (compared to my K1).

Doesn't your brain connect to your right hand in such a way that you
know how to operate a throttle so that you're controlling the bike
    rather than it controlling you?
You live in one of the very few places left where the rider still has
the right to decide how much power they want to put through the back
tyre so you should be fighting to retain that right and just buy a
bike that fits in with your needs/ability rather than coming out with
    statements like that.
The bike'll only do what you tell it to do and once riders start to
say that bikes need de-tuning we'll all end up on 'sanitised' pieces
of shit suitable only for the French market.

If you're only happy on a 600 then buy a 600 but don't start to say
that litre bikes are too much.

It does, but the A mode is snatchy as fook, I couldnt get used to it at
all. And the throttle is REALLY light, it takes nothing at all to turn
it. There was no slack on the throttle either, so it would come on HARD
    either way.
Thats why I said "I". I know there are better riders on here more suited
to a thou'. My ability is lacking it seems. Saying that its the 1st time
    on the bike.
I didnt say it needed de-tuning.
Theres the crux, I think I have out grown a 600.

I had the same issue with the thou when I first started riding it. The
problem was that I wasn't used to something with so much power on tap
with such small movements of the twist grip.

Did I crash? Did I die? Did I chicken out? No, other than a couple of
pant-browning moments in the first month or so of ownership (during
which time it snowed, which hardly helped) I got used to it and now my
right hand is used to making tiny, tiny movements to great effect. [1]

In short, of course you want a litre bike, you fucking gaylord.

Of course, this judgment of mine is based on a 2 mile run down a B road,
    so its hardly comprehensive.
