every SS blackbelt I meet is just subtly *wrong* mentally. It seems to
do something askew to the brain.

Actually I thought you would be well into that stuff. I can definitely
see the benefits when it comes to manufacturing, perhaps more in the
high volume/repetitive area than the one offs though. Certainly a basic
SQC/SPC program (I don't mean software) can pay for itself pretty quickly.

We're too busy making things to read books about people watching other
    people making things.

But, but, it's not about that. It is actually IMHO very interesting and
quite easy to quickly realise tangible benefits. How much scrap do you
turn out? If it's 0 then stop reading now.

Ok the cost of scrap material is probably close to nothing, but do the
sums and work out how much more stuff you could have profitably made
    instead of making the scrap.

A friend of mine (just up the road from you coincidentally) successfully
implemented a lot of the SS ideas and got some quite significant cost
    savings.

I'm not saying they have no merit at all I've just met a great many of
the "borrow your watch and tell you the time" brigade over the years
and this is just another trendy name for common sense and good
    business practice.

IKWYM. Sig Sigma's probably past 'trendy' now thobbut. The math's quite
clever - process cabability was quite an eye opener for me, I saw real
life examples of 'preventing errors before they happened'. Didn't really
    believe it up until then.

No charge for the above information.

Sure. I'm just saying that dressing up common sense and basic good
business practice as an expensive package like this is at best 'cunty'

Congarats. I don't even want to think about how many hours that must've
    taken.
Get a Chuck Norris facemask, then kick him in the head while he's
cowering in the corner peeing himself.

hmm. Well of course a lot of things look like common sense with
hindsight. I've no doubt that there are lots of people out there jumping
on the bandwagon and selling stuff/services around it, but it doesn't
    have to be expensive.

My friend got kinda depressed though when he realised that for every one
engineer he could put on process improvement, the Chinese could put
    about twenty.

Allow me to pay a dollar a day and shoot the staff I don't like and
I'll compete with the Chinese, no probs.
