In memory of another rear tyre

I drove my truck to work today (had to go to Ma & Pa's house to collect
the fire tank and pump afterwards) and had a fairly abrupt puncture at
    about half way.

Once I'd replaced it with the spare I noticed that it had a 25mm wide slit
through the sidewall, but whatever made the hole was nowhere to be seen.

Seeing as how I needed a replacement right away, the tyre shop charged me
$220 for a Pirelli light truck tyre. That's such a pretty little thing
compared to the four Chinese tyres that are currently on the truck that I
can't bear to actually use it, so I'm going to make it the new spare.

Was there a point to this post apart from "I was butt-fukked by a
    tyre-shop"?

Err? Why do you think that? $220 for a Michelin light truck tyre
sounds quite reasonable to me. The tyre will most likely do 50,000
kms. I feel a little ripped off when I pay $400 for a bike tyre that
lasts about a third that distance.

Gerry is trying to re-start the "atheism is a religion" thread, if that's
    more your speed.

    1. Those tyres are all 14 inch, which is quite a bit more common (and
    cheaper) than the 195/70 R15 that my truck needs;

    2. I needed it right away, so eBay wasn't a viable option.

I wasn't suggesting that you made a wrong choice or had any other option
BT. Just observing that having to pay $220 for a light-truck tyre is a
    bit harsh.
(I hope he bought you a drink first)

Yeah, but not one that uses $400 tyres!

The Noggie is on the 3rd Metzler Z6, original was changed at 15k, next
changed at 30k before a big trip, the current one seems good at 43k so
should easily get another 2k out of it, maybe more.

At about $260 a tyre, I have no complaints.

I do wonder about Michelins, a few bods on the Guzzitech forum think
they are great, and last about the same time.

My current tyres are Michelins, about $500 the pair. They've only
    travelled 5000 kms so far.

Holy wombat; I've always thought myself lucky to get 10k out of a rear tyre!

It's a heavy bike, but it's not high horsepower. I think that's what
    usually wears tyres.

Plus the Z6s are a touring tyre. I have no complaints about the grip
but I'm hardly a Mick Doohan clone.

  16. I disliked the Z6s (as the Z4s) with a passion. Tyres always became
unusable due to severe cupping long before the tread wore out. Higher
pressures helped, but only added 1-2,000 km to the life. I don't think I
ever got 10k out of a Z - front or rear.

Maybe the 6s are better? I don't get cupping, and the tyres feel the
    same throughout their lifetime.

They do tend to wear very quickly towards the end of life though, I
have to check them frequently after about 12k.

I used to get horrible cupping on old fashioned Metzelers on the old
Guzzis, but not the new tyre or bike.
