Ins for expats

  1. Anyone here have any experience of insuring a foreign registered bike with a
brit company? I ask because I'm paying 600 euros for tp only, as big bikes
are rare here and the Spanish are all nutters.

suppose you are interested in a UK reg FJR 1300 ? He's keen to flog
    it.

  4. From an old EU press release:
    ---------------
"Can a citizen get cross-border insurance cover in a Member State other
    than that of his residence?"

Citizens can get insurance cover in a Member State other than their
country of residence provided that they find an insurance undertaking
that wishes to provide the service and that meets the conditions set out
in the Insurance Directives. According to EU insurance legislation, all
insurers established in the EU are granted the freedom to operate
throughout EU territory, either by establishment in any Member State(s)
they choose or through the free provision of services across borders. An
EU insurance undertaking wishing to provide cross-border motor insurance
services in another Member State must meet several conditions: 1) it
must be incorporated into the local bureau of the green card system 2)
it must participate in the local guarantee fund 3) it must appoint a
representative in the Member State concerned to handle claims in that
country 4) it must communicate to the host authorities, through the home
supervisory authority, that it wishes to operate through the free
provision of services guaranteed by EU legislation.
    --------------------

Not quite the same as you want, but sheds some light.

Essentially, if a UK (or other) ins co wanted to insure you, they'd need
a presence in your country of residence. If non of the UK companies deem
it worthwhile to insure the thousands of ex-pats in Spain, I'd think
you're out of luck. However, the game is not lost - I distinctly recall
a Belgian company which was offering all-over EU insurance a few years
ago, quite legititmately. Can't recall any further details about them,
    though.

If it's anything like here (Belge), it's difficult to do it legally and,
if you can, it will cost you just as much.

Some just keep their UK registration but that means a whole lot of
faffing as you'll need to get it MOT'd and so on.

Plus, in Belgium, when you have an encounter with plod, if you have a
Belgian address and foreign plates, they're not averse to impounding the
vehicle while they verify that everything is compliant with the law,
e.g. you haven't been here more than the grace period allowed to get
    Belgian registration.

I don't know any company that does it. I have a friend that works for BA in
Heathrow. He's a frog with a frog plated bike and has frog insurance at his
brother's address in France. A UK insurer would be cheaper but they won't
touch his bike unless he registers it in the UK. He prefers to keep it
French registered as he never gets speeding tickets, although that may
    change.

Ebike state: "All eBike Insurance policies provide cover in Europe within
the Territorial Limits of the policy throughout the policy year (365 days).

Your permanent home must be in Great Britain, Northern Ireland or the Isle
of Man and must also be your predominant residence.

This extension is provided for the purpose of travel only."

The only one I know of is Direct Line, but they won't recognise my no-claims
    earned with Sovag.

I just went to an online quote site and it gave me a price of 206 euros with
    - Sovag.

Must remember closer to the renewal. Can someone remind me in October
    please?

Same here in France. Well mostly. Not sure about the impounding, but I wouldn't
    put it past them.
