This is a really stupid one, because I was sure I knew the answer, but ...
if a 3rd party makes a claim against your insurance do you have to pay an
    excess?

If I understand the question correctly: I wouldn't have thought so, no.

    Why do you ask?

Oh it's the fuckwits on the Fiat forum again.

Somebody posted about an accident where their wife drove into the back of
the taxi. The taxi got about 400 quids worth of damage, but the driver was
claiming for personal injury and loss of earnings and so on. There was also
200 quid damage to the wife's car, but she has a 500 quid excess.

He was asking if it was worth taking it through his insurance, as he'd have
to pay out 500 quid anyway and I told him that he only paid the excess if he
was making a claim for his own damages.

Two different people, both of whom claim to work for insurance companies,
have been arguing the toss with me and saying that you have to pay an excess
    for _every_ claim that's made.

    Might have known.

You'll get yourself kicked off there again if you keep arguing with
    people, you know.

It turns out that the lad who posted the question believed those who said he
had to pay an excess, so he gave the taxi driver ukp500 to square things up.

So now he's 500 quid out of pocket and he still has to find a couple of
hundred quid to repair his wife's car.

    Superb.

Do you think he'd be interested in some excellent investment
    opportunities that I've heard about?

So should I be bothered about having a £1,000 excess on my bike
policies? I mean they're TPFT so I'm never likely to make a claim for my
own damages so why am I even having an excess?

Because you could still make a claim for fire or theft, where the excess
would be deducted from any pay-outs that were made to you.

OK, so should I go for a £1,000 excess to bring the premium down then?
My bikes aren't worth the money I'd lose in NCB and inflated premiums if
I did make a claim. The CBR's insurance value is £1,400 and the GS is
    about £500.

Hey, I could even go TPO and put a £2,000 excess on if making a claim
    really isn't an issue!

I'd go TPO, which doesn't have an excess. That should be as cheap as you
    can get your insurance.
