Insurance

Discussion in 'Australian Motorcycles' started by James Mayfield, Dec 17, 2003.

  1. Anyone know any insurer who will insure those of us with less than perfect
driving/riding records? (Like with a 3/yo conviction for dangerous driving?)

NRMA says no. Haven't asked anyone else yet. Don't want to rack up about 30
"Have you had any other insurance company refuse you insurance in the last 5
    years?" thingies.

I tried to search google groups but it came up with a page full of amazon
    shite.

I think "refusing insurance" is different from "declining the opportunity to
give a quote". I always thought refusing to insure you meant they refused to
renew an existing policy. Otherwise, technically, you could be "refused
insurance" if you asked a "60+ pensioners only" insurance company for a quote
when you were only 20 years old.

If they don't ask... they can come and bite you for not providing
information later on in case of an incident?

I had one such (nearly 3 years ago) & made very sure to be very upfront with
my insurance companies about it. That way I know that there's no possible
    "ah, but..." statement at all.

There's a big difference being refused insurance due to not meeting standard criteria, and being
refused due to making yourself ineligible due to fines/convictions/incidents/etc.

When I was selling insurance at the RACV, no fines or incidents were recorded (or even asked for) at
the quote stage. At policy creation time however all that relevant info was collected and the
automated underwriting system would determine if a policy was to be created or knocked back, or if a
larger excess was to be applied. We never bothered entering refusals if someone said they were
knocked back due to a change in policy guidelines (such as no longer covering a type of vehicle) or
if they never met the basic guidelines to start with. That sort of refusal has little to do with
    calculating risk.

And yes, policies could be refused at creation or at renewal.
