I've found consistently found QBE and Arista to be the cheapest, and
RACV and NRMA to be the most expensive, but that's for an older rider
    with non sporty bikes.

But if you are a new rider with a sporty bike then you may actually find
that RACV are cheaper, they don't seem to discount as much for low risk
it seems, but it also seems they don't hit you as much for higher risk.

But ring around... a lot depends upon your riding, driving and insurance
history. Also being in a club, or doing some sorts of rider training or
fitting an alarm to the bike or keeping it garaged and locked or just
where you live all can effect the premium.

It's absolutely case-by-case. Even dealer by dealer on the same
insurance policy. I called every insurance company I could find when I
was trying to get cover on my Hornet - QBE wanted something like $3000
excess from me, Swann's policy price was exorbitant, with a $1100
excess (fair enough I guess as I'd made an at-fault claim from them on
my 250 4 months back), RACV was ludicrous... I was about to settle for
AAMI at $1150 with $400 excess until they informed me they don't insure
    under-30s over 750cc.

Arista were more expensive again, then I was about to sign on with some
other mob who would do about $1100 with $500 excess for me as long as I
got an "independant dealer valuation" on the bike before I bought it...
    wtf?

Calling around to get the dealer valuation (a request that was met with
complete confusion by every dealer I spoke to), I stumbled across Steve
Lesser at A1 motorcycles in Ringwood, who said "lemme get you a quote"
and somehow managed to knock me down three ratings, finally arranging
full comp for the 900 Hornet for $200 a year less than I was paying on
my 250 (!!!) with a third of the excess (!!!!!!) from the SAME BLOODY
COMPANY - Swann - that just paid my last claim (!!!!!!!!!!) and had
quoted me around double over the phone. Oh, and I had a full license
when I bought the 250, to boot. Somebody really saw me coming.

Steve used my ten-odd years of car insurance to knock my rating
category down - even though I'd never had comprehensive car insurance,
so I didn't actually have a rating yet. A history of 3rd party car
insurance is enough to bump your rating.

So take your time with it, it seems completely arbitrary. I mentioned
the HART training I'd done to every single agent and nobody was
prepared to drop the price on that condition. I think HRC membership
would have saved me fifty bucks through the HRC insurance agent. The
bike has an immobiliser so that knocked another $50 down in the end.
But policy prices seem to be determined by dartboard, so your best hope
is to get an honest bloke like Steve batting for you who knows the ins
    and outs of the game.

    Cheers

Oh yes they bloody do, unless I'm going bananas. Give them a ring. I
would have gone with them as I've got my car with them too, but they
reckon 900cc is uninsurable for an under-30. Their premium was the best
quote I got before Steve found me one for about half of it.

AAMI no longer does bikes in NSW. They do bikes everywhere else.

Unless you have an existing policy, in which case they will continue to
    support it.

Nah... you can do it yourself once you understand the system... of
course I get practice insuring and reinsuring 40 vehicles a year which
    helps a tad ;-)

Instead of clicking on "reply" at the bottom of the google newsgroups
page, click on "options" next to the username of the bloke that wrote
the post you're replying to. Then choose "reply" from that list and cut
any shit out you don't want.

That'll keep the whingers at bay.
