    Ok, so i want a Speed Triple, trouble is i won't get one with out
    insurance. Found one for 7100, 1997 model with 20k on the odometer.
    I have several problems.
    -I'm 22
    -Been done for "inappropriate license" (testing the gsx250 for rego
    and got my L's 2 days afterwards from memory)
    -Failing to give way at a roundabout (Nasty truck accident) - Killed
    the GS500, claimed insurance
    -Neg Riding (couldn't make the corner, popped my hip) - Bike suffered
    snapped front end, no insurance but repairable

    I think I've learnt my lesson, rubber side down for about a year. I
    can see why a insurance company will charge me $3000 for my business,
    I don't like it but i understand it. Is there anyone with ideas for a
    insurance company that won't cost an arm and a leg, and maybe another
    arm...while they're at it another leg?

    Don't buy the bike, don't insure it, or pay the price, seems to be your
    three options.
    With your record do you reckon you reaaly should be riding a $7000 bike?
    Plenty of good sub-$3000 bikes out there; buy one, 3pp insure it and any
    crash less than a total write-off-per-year is a win!!

    I only insure my bikes that are worth more than $10,000, or get a "Cover
    Note" when I am going on a really long trip on one (like 4-6,000 kilometres
    in a few days).

    Insurance on lower value bikes when you are still in nappies is hardly worth
    the money. (Wish I was 22).

    When I was 22 I rode my Ducati Pantah (first new bike I ever owned) into a
    tree; broke my back, collapsed a lung and lapsed into an extended coma,
    life-support, hallucinations, multiple major operations and a 5 month stay
    in hospital.....

    My insurer has pretty good rates, and normally I'd be only too happy to
    recommend them to others.

    Only problem is your record, to be honest. I'd like my premiums to stay
    nice and low! You say you've learned your lesson, but I'd like to see
    more than just one year of no accidents/claims, given your overall
    experience as well.

    I'd go with the other advice already given. Don't over-reach yourself
    just yet by getting a bike you can't really afford to insure. You're
    looking at $3000 per year for insurance at the moment, and that probably
    wont drop significantly until you're over 25 and have had no further
    claims. Do you really want to spend $10000 plus on insurance premiums in
    the next 3-4 years for a bike that's only worth $7000 anyway???

    Get yourself something decent around the $3000 mark - there are still
    plenty to choose from, even if they're not your ideal bike. Keep it
    shiny side up for 1 year and it's fully paid for itself on the basis of
    the insurance savings alone. And if you do happen to bin it and write it
    off completely, you still will have paid no more than you would have had
    to pay in premiums anyway (on top of what you would have also paid for
    the bike).

    Your record really works against you on this one. Suck it up, wait your
    time, and buy your dream bike when you can actually afford it. Provided
    you really have learned your lesson, you'll still have many years of
    riding ahead of you to make up for it.

    Looks like plan "B" comes into effect. Cheap bike around $3-4000 with
    3rd party and check back in with the insurance companies in another 3
    years.
    Something Torquey, likes to play on weekends and work weekdays around
    the 1000cc mark....if anyone has any ideas because i don't know where
    to start.

    TRX850? It's possible to pick those up for $4000 these days for the
    earlier ones. Great sound, twin cylinder torque. Look nice too.

    CBR1000F? Solid, reliable better tourer and 2 up than the Trixie but
    not as much fun in the corners.

    GPz900R? The later models with the 17" front wheel fall into your price
    bracket and it's just about impossible to kill them as long as you
    keep the servicing up to them.

    FRZ1000? Faster than the 3 bikes above and not much less comfortable,
    the big Fizzer was the first real litre class bike that could be said to
    truly be sporty.


    That lot should get you started :)

    Now you're talking! Much better plan - and if the rest of your actions
    remain consistent with that type of thinking, you should have no trouble
    maintaining the sort of record that will make insurance companies look
    much more favourably upon you in the future. Good luck!

    not much around at $4K
    you could get 3 or 4 in that budget
    prob the best of the lot

    or you could ask clem where to find a good tripple in your budget ;)

    The K75 is a bit light on for power compared to the K100.

    A K100 would do the job if you found a tidy one though.

    Personally I reckon the early 4 cylinder BMW's are more bleh than the
    CBR1000F's though :)

    TRX is good but you need an iron butt or a sheepie.

    Others to consider ZZR1100, Bandit 1200, TDM850, ZXR750, maybe an
    early ZX9 ?

    You are in luck, I have the perfect bike for you.
    A nice GPz900r with full service history, new tyres and disk brakes, the
    perfect little run around to go to the shops to pick up a carton of milk.

    the seat wasnt great but still good for 550k
    plenty of ZXr's

    early ZZR11 has gearbox probs

    others would be good options

    Ok, great.
    Thanks for your help, got a nice selection of bikes to have a look at
    there. Really like the looks of the fzr1000 or the TRX850 out of that
    lot at the moment.

    *I* hated it, but that doesn't mean it's a bad bike. Overweight and
    lacking in ground clearance sure didn't light my candle but that doesn't
    mean no one else could like one.

    Pretty much everything I listed AND J5 listed are bikes I wouldn't want
    to own (again) -bar the trx - would def have one of those again. And
    I've owned or ridden at least half or more. I'd take the ZXR750 if I
    couldn't get a decent trx

    When did you own one ?

    Woose anyway, I did several 1000Km days on mine. No brain no pain.
    Myehh - only if thrashed - and stands out like the proverbial dogs
    bollocks when you ride one, buy a good one and they're ok

    bought one on ebay for a mate and rode it mel to syd
    could prob do 1000k if you had to

    the 916 seat had about an 850k range

    suzuki across seat was equiv to about 100k before pain started which was
    good
    as you needed fuel then lol
    nah you buy a D model which was fixed but yes no good if thrashed
    so you still have it then with no probs ;)

    Yeah I can't say I'd recommend it as a course of action :) Have to (or
    want to badly enough) is about right
    It *was* pretty horrible - I only rode one for about 200K and yeah it
    wasn't great - the KR1 is about the same - after 200 odd K you really
    need to get off.

    <grin> Clearly not ! As you well know :) Point; I guess, but I did a
    lot of Ks before I got rid of it (due to an absence of licence) 90 or a
    100K I trhink
