Interesting dilemna

  1. I've been following this thread quietly but what you've said above has
    raised an interesting issue.

I actually thought of this thread yesterday morning while I was filling
up at my local service station. As usual after I'd filled up I took off
my helmet before I entered to pay. I don't have a problem with that,
somebody wearing a helmet could be using it to hide their face while
robbing the hapless person at the cash register. I know I'm not being
discriminated against, I know that not all motorcyclists are holdup
bandits and that's not what those No Helmets Inside signs are implying.
They are simply about not raising the anxiety levels of those at the
    checkout.

Now being female and riding a motorcycle, what if I was also a devout
    Muslim?

Even after taking off my helmet, I'd still be wearing my Burkha.

Technically I'd complied with the service stations wishes, but would the
attendant still be within his/her rights to refuse to serve me?

I mean, my face is just as covered up as if I'd still be wearing my
helmet, in fact probably more so if my Burkha is the type where only my
    eyes are visible.

    Interesting dilemna ...

After reading Ms Margaret Cornes's last post, I want ½ a gram of
    whatever they're on:

IIRC, this issue has come up regarding drivers licence photos in
Australia... either this year or last year.
Not sure what the outcome was though.

    KP,

Have a look at Afganistan, when that maniac took power, the women were
forced to wear that garb against their will. Now they will probably
return to a more appropriate attire for their region.

It appears to be the "hard-line" and probably anti western culture
muslims that insist on that from of dress. I think that if the women
HAVE to wear it in a western style society, so should the men. Changes
    would happen very quickly.

    Quick Question:

Have you EVER tried to ride a bike side saddle? It's a little different to
riding a horse side saddle, which can be done..... for reasons I leave you
    to ponder...

Really? Is that written down somewhere? Do they have to sign it as part of
    their citizenship application?

Oh sorry, you must mean that YOU expect them to assimilate....

lol...I get the picture but you are coming at it from the wrong angle.....
half assed Australian style...(Don't take it personally..it is a description
    not a statement)

Remember that religion has preference over Government....which means you are
not subject to politics and possibly even law....and to stray here we can
    play the martyr game.

So you take your helmet off because you are obligated to and almost out of
good heart..which I guess is a small respect for the service that you are
    being provided.

Now a devote Muslim would do no different obviously as it is disrespect to
    be seen without the veil.

The attendant cannot refuse to serve you due the respect that you are
showing(as a Muslim you would not think twice as the penalty could be death
for removing the veil) even if the attendant thinks it is disrespectful...it
is loss on their part for being disrespectful asking you to remove the veil.

Don't try it you are not a Muslim and will most likely be challenged...due
    your possible disrespect.

All a bit flaky....well this is obvious when God is greater than Human Law

  11. How many Australian living muslims every year are uneccessarily forced to
return to the homelands for the death penalty just because it is denied
    here?
    veil.

Then Muslims should also respect the attendants beliefs of hitting the drop
down screen, silent alarm or producing a firearm whilst serving them.
Why not if my own spiritual beliefs required wearing of a pink striped
    balaclava or George Bush mask.

  13. No just hypothetically,
Actually my beliefs require me to wear a muscle shirt in the middle of
winter instead of singlets & ugg boots as winter thongs substitutes.

You are not wrong...this is where it gets silly...as personally I have my
own laws...which conflict with Human Law or preference...which include, kill
for peace when it is deemed logical...irrelevant of what law says I am
allowed to do....(which means I will kill government trained Military police
if I have to but I will also accept fault for breaking the law within all
reason for common logical breaches such as speeding or drinking and driving)
Sometimes things can go wrong with government choices which are not based on
facts..therefore I reserve myself the right to put it right.

Now to pass this(my) religion as a recognized attribute is very hard to do.
It is simply what I believe in...but according to law the religion must have
so many years experience and so many members..not be a threat to
society..before it is recognized as a valid religion or simply belief which
    can bypass politics or democracy.

Muslims do not know why they should respect the attendants beliefs as they
are not Muslims...as remember god is greater than human and it is disrespect
in what THEY believe in to be seen without a veil...not what the attendant
    believes in.

Sure the attendant can be half assed and hit the emergency alarm, but to be
gained is what? A racist petrol station...one less tank of feul sold?
    Its your call

Geez, Pete, you have lead a sheltered life.

Ladies in Europe, many of them wearing dresses ride motorcycles.

Quite a few of them are _spectacularly_ good at it, too. :)

But you would not be silly enough to be bounced from a nightclub
    ....I surmise not.....

Just as the Muslims riding Harlys in Australia would possibly not even
bother with petrol or the bike in the fist place unless the man was riding
    it....I think so....
Muslim women normally walk to throw Hypothetical out the door....and camels
    are transport

Which maniac took power in Afghanistan ?
For their religion you mean, not their region.
Something like "all women will cover up till we defeat the infidel western
    culture"?
How quickly will it happen? The US et al removed the Taliban government from
Afghanistan almost 2 years ago. Are you saying that this quick change you
write of isn't quite that quick? or that there is still some other maniac who
needs to be removed from power... (a much more plausible explanation if the
maniac in question is George W Bush).

No I've never tried it myself, but I've seen Valentino Rossi doing it while
sitting on the fuel tank. I imagine it's easier if you're sitting on the
seat, easier still if you're on the pillion seat, easier still if you're the
    only one on a stepthrough.

...ummm.."started" is probably the wrong word...
