It was supposed to be much tidier handling but much worse riding.

    Weird little cars the MGFs.

    Pete M says...
I did development driving on early VVC models back in 96/97. They could
really **** the inside edge of the nearside tyre when pushed hard round
the Millbrook bowl. Very few far more powerful cars did this, but the MG
would completely **** a set of rear tyres every 2 hours. When doing
certain driving schedules we'd be given an alarm call on the radio to
remind us to come in for safety check. Every time we went in we'd have
new wheels and tyres fitted as a matter of course.

One other really annoying thing about them was the gearchange, all of
the ones we had there had a large printed sign on the dash informing the
driver that 5th and 3rd gears were very close to each other. Apparently
some drivers had majorly over-revved engines and done a lot of damage by
changing into 3rd instead of 5th at the 4th gear redline.

A preproduction Lotus Elise was quicker in every respect, they had the
same basic 1.8 engine but without the VVC.

That sounds like the kind of job that'd be enjoyable for a few weeks, then
mindbogglingly tedious afterwards. Better than driving a desk though.
Elise is a metric fuckload lighter, and has proper suspension.

I actually like the K series engines, but the head gasket faults that come
with them are a major pain. If Rover had got those engines as right as it
initially seemed, the company would probably still be going - and quite
    possibly respected as engine makers.

If you can't manage to snip a 92-line OP in order to add two lines at
the end, you might as well go down with him.

I was merely preserving the evidence in case it did a Des and
    disappeared. :)

i used to have one of those mgfs: they are supposed to crash very well,
the a-bars are well designed. lots of other things aren't, though.

At the time of the accident I doubt I was doing even 70. At the point I
started actually pinning the brakes no more than 60. At no point on the day
did our speed exceed 78 mph.
    OK.
