Interstate demerit points

I got a speeding fine in S.A a month or so ago, and I'm wondering if
their demerit point scheme (which seems to add rather subtract points to
your license?) can be applied to my Victorian license?

i.e do they "translate" the demerit point scheme into ours so that I
lose what I would have lost if the fine was issued in VIC?

Convoluted question, I know, but I'm sure you know what I mean.

Hey if they work in reverse to us, does that mean that speeding in SA gets a
    victorian his license back? :)

No you just pay the fine. Demerits only apply to the state you have your
    licence in.

Well I thought they were s'posed to be national now but the three I lost in
Victoria about 5 years ago never showed up on my Qld licence.

That's the theory. The interstate authority sends a message to your local
authority about your loss of points, and the locals strip them off your
    licence.

But it seems this rarely (if ever) happens in practice. I lost points
nearly 2 1/2 years ago in NSW (twelve points!), but never heard a squeak
    from ACT Urban Services.

Well some of the others here appear to have had some luck.
If you get caught in another state, that state issues you with whatever
punishment they have for the infringement... then they tell the licensing
authorities in your state what offence you committed and your state issues you
with the demerit points applicable for that offence in your state. In 96 I
got caught speeding in WA and NSW. The points from the NSW offence ended up
on my license, but not the WA offence.

AKAIK all state demerit point systems work the same way. You start
with 0 points and once you have *gained* 12 you're in trouble.

A demerit point is a bad things and you want to avoid getting them
    rather than loosing them.

Another common misconception is the P-plate vs 'pillion / power
restrictions'. They are totaly independant things however they seem
    to be used interchangeably.

    Just being pedontic...

  17. I got done for 15Kmh over halfway between Adelaide and port Augusta a
couple of years ago when riding back from the GP and got the fine, but
    didn't get the points.

Where points are passed between states it's whatever the points are in the state
you got booked. So if you get nailed in NSW on a double points weekend at 30K
over then you will cop 6 points, even though as a Victorian you don't have that
many points associated with the same offence.

I don't know for sure whether SA/Vic swap points, it's certainly true that
Tasmania opted out because Vic and NSW wanted them to throw too many dollars
into the kitty for the privilege.

Vic, ACT and NSW are usually pretty reliable about trading points (although a
mate of mine seems to have got away with it the other month so it's not 100%). I
know QLD/NSW is erratic - I've been booked there and so far (touch wood) they've
never hit me with the points

Are you sure? I rang Vicroads a year or so back and asked that question and
was told that the interstate RTA notify Vicroads of the offence and Vicroads
issue the number of points applicable for the offence you committed. I just
had a glance at the NSW demerit points list... strange anomaly... they
increased the number of points for exceeding the limit by <15kph from 1 to
2... but if you pass a school bus at <15kph in excess of 40kph limit you still
only get 1 point... and only 1 point for tailgating .. what a bargain !!
