That's where half the group stopped in 2002. The hotel was basic, don't
expect anything special there.

Port Erin itself is quiet and as far as redeeming features go it has one
of the nicest beaches on the island, and an excelent pub that does a
good selection of real ales (unlike most pubs on the islans where you'll
get Okells, and like it.) as you say it's a fair drive away from where
most things happen.

 

Homestay isn't a guest house or B&B AFAIK.
My understanding is someone's house or flat and they are away for the
duration. ICBW.

 

It's got availability from the 29th, with the exception of Sep 1st.,
so less than ideal, as it would mean coming a day later than I'd been
thinking of and moving out for a night in the middle.

I'm not sure what they'd be able to do that calling the hotels
directly can't :-}

I knew it did. Nice restaurant and bar. I've emailed them and asked if they
have rooms. Bit of a long shot I know.

 

Now that looks more like it. Sadly, they, like most of the rest of the
island's hotels, seem firmly rooted in the 20th century so don't have
online booking/availability, so I'm waiting for them to call me back.

They may be perfectly nice, but as a persuasion technique "We can stay
in this five star hotel with excellent restaurants in house and it's
right in the heart of things" sounds a damn sight better than "we'll
be staying in somone's house about which we know nothing, but I'm sure
the bed-linen will be clean and there's probably/possibly restaurants
withing walking, or at least driveing distance, although we'll have to
get our own breakfasts and clean up after ourselves".

decent hotels don't seem to exist on the Isle of Man. They do have a
Hilton but it seems to be fully booked.

Having done a search there is the Rutland Hotel in Douglas which
doesn't seem to bad but seems horribly expensive for what it is.
