So the worldwide production of Tachometers must stop now because all
the people that will ever need one, replace one etc has dried up?

I think the argument that the neither do the vast majority of the
population is a little mute, if things always needed the vast
majority, very little would ever see final production. All that is
    need is a market.
A new one in the market for one
again..a mute argument, there is enough people into that hobby to
justify a device like this (also refer to my ebay link in my last
    post)

  2. Moot. The word is moot. A mute is something you shove up the pointy
    end of a trumpet.

I think my analogue Hella tach from about 1980 would still work, although
I haven't used it for about 3 years on even a car.

I doubt that the bike tacho is accurate enough for tuning carbs with (I
    know mine isn't).
My multimeter doesn't have tach/dwell and it would be more expensive to
buy a new one than the app.

No, you need to reread what I have written above, because I don't
think I said what you think I said. I never said that noone would
need a tacho. I'm sure there are thousands of people every day who
have the need to buy such a piece of equipment. But the majority of
them will buy a quality instrument. By quality I mean an instrument
which actually measures the engine speed, rather than an iphone app
which guesses it based on audible cues (which may or may not originate
from the engine who's speed is being measured), and even invites the
user to contribute their own guesses so that it can guess the engine
speed more accurately. I would call that a novelty. I say that
relative to other iphone apps, and especially novelty apps, $12 is too
expensive. If it was .99c I would buy it in a flash and measure the
engine speed of everything I could, but not because it was a useful
    pursuit...
and I suspect 116,605 of them have motorcycles which are already
equipped with a tachometer which is far more accurate and reliable
than any iphone app. Why would they need another one?

Surely 'dropping 50 revs' is an aural indication. They don't mean
"exactly 50 revs or between 49 and 51 revs". You don't need a tacho
for that. I think most dwell meters have tacho capability, but
analogue tacho's won't indcate a 50 rev change with the accuracy you
appear to be asking for. You are just looking for a rise or fall in
revs, not a specific number of rev change.

You don't need a tacho for what you're trying to do.

    Cheers

I would not need a tacho to do the above Marty. This is a standard
carb tuning procedure, unchanged since before Johnno was born.

That's a bit mean. Shoving someone up the end of a trumpet because
    they can't speak.

You don't for that particular operation, but it's very nice to have
one for the subsequent mixture richening/egt cooling, and to gauge the
overall improvement or otherwise at throttle settings. Of course you
can do all of that aurally, but only after a lot of experience.
Having said that, I would be a bit suspicious of an app for an iPhone,
but at the price, I would be tempted to experiment.
