First day at school, we were told to have passed the entrance exam, we
had an IQ in the top 1% of the population

I'm fairly sure my IQ is nowhere near 178

Mozart, apparently had an IQ of 180

More proof that high IQs are meaningless. All that intelligence & he
wasted his life writing shit music.

Cattell test - gives much higher scores than the more commonly used Weschler
or British Ability Scales. Citing results without stating the test used is
potentially confusing. A bit like saying that your garden has a length of
179 without saying whether that is inches, feet, yards, metres or whatever.

Perhaps the problem with his music is not that he had such a high IQ
    but rather that you don't.

No, I don't think my IQ could have any bearing on his music.

  13. Indeed (looks in mirror).
    I scored > 150 in the D^HMensa tests but I wouldn't say that I was the
    sharpest tool in the box.

I *am* very good at pattern-matching and technology - which is why I
    scored so highly (I think).

  14. You get to go and meet some (reputedly) very very bright but actually
extremely dull and borderline-psycotic people and talk to them.

Not the most exciting club I ever joined..
No. Or there weren't back in London Densa in the mid-80's.

I didn't bother joining. Their promotional bumph had a photo of some
dorky kid standing next to a pile of books, grinning like a moron, and I
reasoned that this wasn't something to which I wanted to aspire. (Not
least beacause I already was some dorky kid with a pile of books, but
    that's by the by.)

Go see any recording of a Radio 4 comedy show at the Drill Hall, and
count the fit nymphomaniacs. It won't take long.

Understatement in my experience. More fun to be had here:

"Jabberwacky: Talking much about oneself can also be a means to conceal
    oneself.
    User: So true.
    Jabberwacky: True, true.
User: What are you trying to hard.
Jabberwacky: Are you going on about cheesecake again?
    User: No. Were you?
    Jabberwacky: No.
    User: That is a relief.
Jabberwacky: Who do you wish to wed?
    User: Jane Fonda.
    Jabberwacky: That would be impossible.
    User: Why?
Jabberwacky: Because nothing can travel faster than light."

    <Can't argue with that>

    Jab: Are you smart?
Me: In what way - intelligence or dress sense?
Jab: Yes, I do. We, as a race, do not understand fully any other form of
    intelligence.
Me: That doesn't make any sense.
    Jab: Yes it does.
Me: No it doesn't. I asked what you meant by 'smart' and your replied
'yes, I do'. That doesn't answer my question.
Jab: You asked me about 'hot dogs' not 'small' ones.
Me: You're useless. I never said anything about 'hot dogs' or 'small
    ones'
Jab: Yes you did - you told me you stole then to sell for hair
    extensions.

I think it's got a way to go yet...

  18. I joined for a year because a) I wanted to beat my 'intellectual'
brother in the IQ tests (and did) and b) I managed to persuade my
    parents to pay the fee.

I wouldn't bother spending any of my own money to join.

    Quite.

    Jab: Hey!
    User: Hello jabberwacky.
    Jab: My name isn't Jabberwacky!
    User: What is it then?
    Jab: Not your job.
    User: What about my job?
    Jab: My name is Annie.
User: Ah, you are like The Two Ronnies sketch where you answer the
    previous question.
Jab: I'm not a boy, I may act like a boy but I'm much older.
    User: How old are you?
Jab: No, my name is Annie.
User: Yes, I know that. How old are you?
Jab: Yes you are right, my name is Annie.

    Oh dear...

Indeed, but an interesting approach to AI 'chat', and more amusing than
    'Eliza' - reminiscent of 'Racter'.
