  8. Paul Blezard tested one in the UK, and some copper tried to nick him for
    not wearing a helmet.

CPS (or whoever) said it was a motorcycle. Blez said it wasn't.

CPS said it had two wheels.

Blez pointed out the retractable outriggers and said it had four.

CPS said it was a car, then.

Blez said it wasn't because it fell under the weight requirements.

CPS said it had to be a trike.

Blez referred them to the outriggers.

In the end they abandoned the prosecution, with poor grace, because they
discovered the Ecomobile wasn't really classifiable under UK law.

He wrote it all up for the Daily Telegraph - it made for very funny
reading, but left you with a nasty taste in your mouth at Plod's
determination to nick him for *something*.

If that was the case, are you allowed to ride/drive it on the roads and
how on earth do you get insurance?

Are you asking if all foreign registered vehicles have to
    have UK based insurance?

I think he's asking "do foreign vehicles that cannot be classified
under UK law have to have UK insurance?"

And if so, then its a Catch 22, so they're obviously unusable on public
    roads.

Or more generally, if you are in possession of an "unclassifiable"
vehicle, how can you get insurance to use it on ANY road?

You can't. This was always the problem with quadbikes. Farmers could
insure them as a farm vehicle, but no insurers wanted to know when it
came to personal use as they weren't classified as vehicles. This all
changed a few years ago when an EU law was adopted, & quads officially
    became vehicles.

is this national "stupid day" or something?

Different countries have different type approval requirements. For
instance, some vehicles road legal in Poland wouldn't be allowed on
sale in the UK, but it's perfectly OK for someone to drive one from
Poland to and around the UK.

Is this "state the bleeding obvious day"?

My point was:- If you build a vehicle that is so revolutionary that it
falls outside the current regulations in every country, how do get it
insured for a journo to review?

Do I make myself clear or do you need words of one sylable?

You should try saying that next time then, as you missed out
the important part when you first asked: *every* country.

It appears to be "Nicknoxx getting the wrong end of the stick day".
what vehicle are you talking about? The Ecomobile, discussion of which
spawned this sub-thread, did not fall "outside the current regulations
    in every country".
you'd have made yourself clearer if you'd stated the "in every
country" bit. In reply to Tog's comment that the Ecomobile was not
classifiable under /UK/ law, you replied:

"If that was the case, are you allowed to ride/drive it on the roads
and how on earth do you get insurance?"

clearly missing the point that it was a road legal vehicle elsewhere
    in Europe.

    darsy scribbled:
That depends on the Polish persons insurance. If their existing policy
didn't cover them they can probably get additional\extended insurance.

The way I read Nicks post was from the POV of a UK person who had
    imported/bought an unclassifiable vehicle.

    Oh no, not another one.
OK, but TOG didn't actually say is was road legal in Europe or anywhere
else. What would be the situation if it was only approved in San Marino
    or Nauru for example?
