I don't think it ever was what it used to be.

Was being immediately local one of the criteria. From York, for instance, it
    would be equidistant from Dover.
ICBW but are the consequences of getting pulled for 150+ in France not worse
    than in the UK?

Yeah, but that's only because he is shagging someone who uses the
    short bus.

TBF it hits it on the head. UK has greater population density than Holland
now, statistically, but mostly it's down where you live. From Derbyshire up
    it gets a lot better.

I'm wondering if that's the issue. I was thinking that 20 (ish) years
ago, the summers went on and on, the roads were quieter, and I seemed to
spend ages riding and travelling and enjoying myself. I had the time to
do it and took my tent.

Right up to date and my opportunities to ride for enjoyment rather than
transportation are severely limited. So to make the most of the limited
time available and reduce the hassle/impact of the elements I'd prefer
to stay in a hotel. Which (for me at least) is prohibitively expensive [1].

Right, I'm off out before the sun goes in.

[1] Will do occasional nights if I have to, but staying in hotels when
touring around for a week or so just aint going to happen

Oh, I wasn't agreeing that it was. I suspect it was "humour" on Ogden's
    part.

Brittany also makes, and drinks, quite a lot of the stuff.

And Alsace is as well known for its beers as its wines.

But yes, as generalisations go, it's not too far off.

Well the Pyrenees are closer to me than Scotland, so if I go away for a
week's blasting, it's a no brainer which direction I head. But the
point is I can't go for a Sunday run here & spend a few hours blasting
along traffic-free twisty roads, whereas there are plenty of places
across the channel where I could (& have).

Helps with the traffic, but doesn't magically create the good roads.

I have, it's bloody rocket fuel. Slivovice works well, too.

Pilsner Urquell is probably my favourite lager, but has to be from the
tap. Doesn't seem to work in bottles, don't know why.

You say that, but I've come to the conclusion that the UK is ideal. I
know we all dream of belting round France and Italy etc, but in the
summer it can really be *too* hot on a bike in those countries.
Summer in the UK is usually ideal biking weather.
This is true, but has bugger all to do with 'biking in the UK', AFAIC
Part of the joy of a bike is how easily you can overtake them, tho. I
rode from Cheltenham to Maidenhead yesterday, all on A roads, and had
    a whale of a time.
They only lock you up if you plead guilty to dangerous driving. AFAIK
no-one has gone jail just for speeding
